Twitter Has Stopped Accepting Account Verification Applications

Twitter is once again pausing its account verification program. The company had relaunched the program on May 20th after having previously suspended it back in November 2017. However, it has now stopped accepting public applications for the “blue tick” verified badges because of the volume of pending applications.

“We’re rolling in verification requests. So we gotta hit pause on accepting any more for now while we review the ones that have been submitted,” Twitter Verified said in a tweet, suggesting that the company has received too many requests within the first week of reopening the program. “We’ll reopen requests soon! (We pinky swear),” it added.

When Twitter started accepting public requests for the verified batches on May 20th, it had cautioned that users may need to wait longer to get a response. “Once you submit your application, you can expect an emailed response from us within a few days, but this could take up to a few weeks depending on how many open applications are in our queue,” the company said in a blog.

It appears Twitter has received way too many requests than it had hoped. As such, it has decided to stop accepting new applications for the time being. It’s unclear when applications will resume, though the company promises to reopen the program “soon.”

Twitter pauses account verification applications temporarily

Twitter suspended its account verification program in November 2017 after hearing feedback that the process felt arbitrary and confusing. The company had to face widespread criticism over its decision to verify the account of a white supremacist.

It went back to the drawing board and came up with a revamped verification policy last November. The company categorized six types of “notable” accounts that can apply for verification under its new policy. Those include government; companies, brands, and non-profit organizations; news; entertainment; sports; activists, organizers, and other influential individuals. It has also set certain criteria for each type of account to receive the verified badge.

In simpler terms, anyone can now apply for verification on Twitter. It’s up to the company to decide whether the account falls under the aforementioned six categories and meets the required criteria. So it’s not very surprising that Twitter has received an overwhelming number of applications for verification. So much so that it had to pause the program temporarily. It’s unclear how long it will take for the company to review all the pending applications. Hopefully, it will resume applications soon.
