Corsair HX1200i Power Supply Coming Soon

Corsair HXi PSU Series

The Corsair HXi family of 80 PLUS Platinum-certified power supplies were announced in June at Computex 2014. Corsair launched the new series with three models; HX750i, HX850i and HX1000i. The three power supplies feature a fully modular design, 100% Japanese electrolytic capacitors rated at 105C, Corsair Link support, a 140mm fluid dynamic bearing fan that is silent at low loads (Zero RPM) and advanced circuit protection. Since being released the Corsair HXi series was found to be a solid PSU for enthusiasts looking for a solid high-performance PSU for their desktop PC. If you needed more power than the HX1000i ($229.99 shipped) can offer you had to step up to the Corsair AX1200i Digital PSU ($314.99 shipped), which runs $85 more.

It looks like there will be another 1200 Watt PSU option for Corsair fans. EXPreview has posted up a picture of the Corsair HX1200i, which is the first known image of this particular model. This model will most certainly come in at a lower price point than the AX1200i and it will be of course more than the HX1000i. If we’d have to take a wild guess it looks like pricing will be around $259-$269 for the HX1200i. We expect it to be one of the announcements by Corsair at CES 2015 and that is likely when pricing and availability will be officially announced. This power supply hasn’t been kept a secret by Corsair as it was listed as a model in the HXi series owners manual that has been published online for many months.

Synaptics SecurePad Placed in Notebook TouchPads

Synaptics Delivers Strong Security and Ultimate Usability with SecurePad for Notebook PCs

First solution to integrate fingerprint ID technology into the TouchPad

Synaptics SecurePad

SAN JOSE, Calif. – December 10, 2014 — Synaptics Inc., a leading developer of human interface solutions, today announced the availability of SecurePad, the latest Fast Identity Online (FIDO) ready authenticator to support the use of password-free security. Leveraging Synaptics’ fingerprint ID technology, SecurePad is the first solution to be integrated directly into the TouchPad, delivering high level security without sacrificing any convenience for the consumer, while also eliminating the need for OEMs to implement duplicate hardware components, simplifying the supply chain and reducing manufacturing cost and complexity.

Synaptics SecurePad enables password-free security and login to any online service that supports the FIDO Unified Authentication Framework (UAF). Instead of creating passwords, end users complete a fingerprint authentication on the laptop to register a public/private key pair, unique to the laptop, the user account, and the online service. To login, the end user performs the same fingerprint authentication, initiating a cryptographically secure challenge/response with the online service provider. As a result, the solution does away with storing password databases in the cloud, thwarting the efforts of thieves to steal and exploit consumer passwords.

FIDO enhanced online services will eliminate countless annoyances for consumers such as creating, remembering and securing unique passwords against cyber threats. Furthermore, SecurePad creates an elegant user experience by placing the fingerprint sensor within easy reach for consumers where it can be easily accessed without the need to move a finger from the TouchPad.

“Digital security has never been more important to consumers as it is today and while users understand the necessity for protecting their digital information, username and passwords are no longer a reliable method of security against today’s cyber threats,” said Patrick Moorhead, founder, president and principle analyst for Moor Insight and Strategy. “The growing adoption of fingerprint ID technology gives OEMs the opportunity to implement modern security solutions that give consumers a convenient and easy-to-use method for protecting their data.”

SecurePad Key Features:

  • Integrated Small Area Touch Sensing Technology: A 4mm by 10mm area sensor on the surface of the TouchPad activates with the touch of a finger, delivering a simple and intuitive usage model.

  • Advanced Matching Engine: Next generation matching technology achieves excellent security performance with high usability.

  • Supports 360 Approach: Fingerprint detection works with the fingertip placed at any angle on the sensor area for ease of use.

  • Various Pad and Fingerprint Sensor Form Factors: SecurePad is available in all typical Synaptics TouchPad, ClickPad and ForcePad sizes.

  • Encrypted Sensor/Host Communication: Encrypted communication between the fingerprint sensor and host processor ensures security of fingerprint data.

  • Optional LEDs for Visual Feedback: Full RGB support with multiple LED light guide options provides visual feedback and allows for operation in dark environments.

“At Synaptics, we believe that in our future, secure access to devices and services should be truly effortless,” said Godfrey Cheng, VP of marketing, Human Interface Systems Division of Synaptics. “The introduction of SecurePad demonstrates our continued innovation and brings us one step closer to our ultimate vision of a TouchPad that offers passive and persistent authentication for consumers.”

Availability

SecurePad is available now for OEM integration.

Amazon Beats Out Netflix For Golden Globe Nominations!

Netflix and Amazon will face off for a Golden Globe! The nominations for the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards have been announced and Netflix has received seven nominations and Amazon has received two. The nominations are seen as a huge victory for Amazon, which received its first major award nominations ever for its first series, “Transparent”. “Transparent” is up for Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical and best actor in Comedy or Musical for Jeffrey Tambor. Not bad nominations for an upstart streaming content provider competing against television’s most respected outlets. “Transparent” will go head to head against Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” in the best comedy series category, which also includes “Girls,” “Jane the Virgin” and “Silicon Valley.”

Netflix likely won’t be losing any sleep over this though as they won a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV drama with Robin Wright for her work in House of Cards. Netflix and Amazon hope to change the face of entertainment and it looks like they are slowly gaining traction and as a result shows are being produced and consumed much differently now than just a decade ago. Will Netflix and Amazon streaming services be able to stay ahead of the pack ten years from now in 2024? The changes we will see in the next 10 years will be exciting as who knows what the streaming effect will bring years from now.

You can view the full list of 72nd Golden Globe Nominees here.

Pirate Bay – Plundered Again

The much maligned and troubled yet popular bit-torrent web site The Pirate Bay has once again been shut down after a raid by Swedish authorities. Police seized servers in Stockholm after a complaint was filed by the Rights Alliance, a group targeting Internet crime. The investigated which had been ongoing “for years” led to the location of the servers although there have been no reports thus far of arrests made in connection with the action.

Pirate Bay

The site operated for years on the edge of the law, narrowly evading law enforcement intervention by changing their model of operation by switching from torrent files, to magnet links which offer a cloud-based solution. The movie and music industries have been two of the major players in the continued crusade to get the site shut down due to countless thousands of unlawfully downloaded songs and movies causing reported losses totaling billions of dollars to those impacted companies. Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde (no longer affiliated with the site) doesn’t really seem to care about the shut down. “(A raid) happened over eight years ago last time. That time, a lot of people went out to protest and rally in the streets. Today few seem to care. And I’m one of them,” Sunde said in a blog post. “Why, you might ask? Well. For multiple reasons. But most of all, I’ve not been a fan of what TPB has become.”

Remember That Old iPod You Threw Away?

It could be worth big bucks. Like fashion, electronics tend to come back popularity long after they’ve been discontinued and can end up costing substantially more than they sold for when they were new. Such is the case with the iPod Classic which many have ditched long ago for one of the several svelte new iPod versions. This year it’s a popular stocking stuffer as more than 3,000 have sold on eBay since it was discontinued in October and are fetching up to $400 a pop according to The Guardian UK newspaper. One of the attractions is the 160GB storage capacity which can hold around 40k+ songs (who has a library of 40k songs?) which is much more than the current models can offer. Apple quit making them after stating that they no longer has access to the components and a redesign wasn’t something they were willing to pursue. The inclusion of a spinning platter hard drive rather than gobs of solid state flash storage is what allows the storage to be so expansive yet still be affordable. However, hard drives are more fragile than solid state memory so those that find one under their Christmas tree this year might want to take a little more care with it than their phone or latest generation iPod.

iPod Classic

With cloud music services available (albeit mostly pay, whether it be for the service or the data consumed) there’s less need for so much self-contained storage so it will be interesting to see how long this wave of demand holds up. As supply becomes more scarce, prices will only continue to climb.

Father of Video Games, Ralph H. Baer, Passes Away at 92

Ralph H. Baer passed away over the weekend from an unknown cause at the young age of 92. His death was confirmed by his family. If you’ve ever played video games and enjoyed it, you need to thank Ralph Baer (Wikipedia). He was known as “The Father of Video Games”. In the late 1960s, Baer developed a system known as the “Brown Box” while working for Sanders Associates, a New Hampshire-based defense contractor. This prototype would later be the Magnavox Odyssey 1TL200 that would be released in May 1972 in the United States. This device started one of the most profitable industries in the world and sold 130,000 units in the first year.

Take a look at the video clip below to see Ralph Baer and Bill Harrison testing the Brown Box back in 1969 when it was cutting edge technology.

Along with the Brown Box, Baer invented the first light gun accessory. He’s also the co-creator of the light-up memory games Simon and Super Simon. On his website, Bear stated that he holds more than 150 U.S. and foreign patents.

Ralph Bae

Here is a more recent interview that was done in 2013 by PBS. Gamers around the would are thankful for his contributions to the game industry!

Samsung 850 EVO Series SSD Review – 120GB and 500GB

The EVO Gets Updated

A little over a year ago we got our first look at Samsung’s 840 EVO drive, the first drive to prominently feature energy efficient TLC NAND along with really solid performance. It’s a drive that was a big hit with consumers because it was priced well and was super power efficient. Plus Samsung’s SSD marketing campaign didn’t hurt either (remember this gem?). This time around the 850 EVO still features TLC NAND but now it’s of the 3D Vertical NAND (V-NAND) variety making it the first to market on the client drive. While other makers haven’t even ventured into the TLC NAND market, Samsung is already on their second generation TLC drive. Available capacities are 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB with MSRP’s ranging from $99.99 to $499.99. They sent us over a 120GB and 500GB drive to see what we think.

Samsung 850 EVO

I could wax on for a few pages about the technical aspects of 3D V-NAND and potentially put you to sleep but I’d rather share this video which does a nice job providing a somewhat technical yet entertaining overview that most will be able to understand. It’s actually from the release of the 850 PRO model that came out earlier this year.

The 850 EVO also receives a new MGX controller to go along with the new NAND. The outcome of that is performance has been slightly bumped up from the 840 EVO drive, but mainly in the IOPS writes which receives a nice boost.

Samsung 840 EVO vs 850 EVO

Both the 840 and 850 EVO drives carry the same 540MB/s reads and 520MB/s writes specifications. The warranty has also been increased from 3-years to 5-years.

Intel Demonstrates Range of Mobile Products at Their BlizzCon Booth

BlizzCon-Intel-7431We’re catching up on some of the things we saw at BlizzCon last weekend with the Intel booth. Intel was a BlizzCon sponsor, providing hundreds of processors for the demo computers, so we noticed a ton of action happening at Intel’s booth. BlizzCon guests could participate in a scavenger quest and one of the tasks involved talking to an Intel exhibitor and getting the quest card stamped. We also saw lots of guests milling around several major gaming personalities who partnered with Intel during BlizzCon or taking pictures at the green screen.BlizzCon-Intel-7435

Nonetheless, there were a bunch of Intel laptops, ultraportables, tablets, and hybrids around the booth, most of which unsurprisingly were running Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, which was created with touch-enabled devices in mind. We even noticed a bunch of people taking the hybrid laptop-tablets and flipping them into tablet mode just to experience playing the collectable card-game directly with their fingers and hands almost like a real card game. Hearthstone currently is only available on Windows PCs, OSX and the iPad so not many people have yet gotten the chance to play Hearthstone this way. The game graphics don’t run buttery smooth on Intel integrated graphics, but being able to engage in Hearthstone’s lighthearted and mobile friendly gameplay from anywhere with WiFi is a delight for gamers.BlizzCon-Intel-7437 BlizzCon-Intel-7432

BlizzCon-Intel-7425 BlizzCon-Intel-7424 BlizzCon-Intel-7423

Intel also invited a number of professional Starcraft II players and popular Twitch personalities into their booth. We caught PhantonL0rd, a popular Twitch streamer setting up to stream from one of the two Intel streaming stations.BlizzCon-Intel-7434

We even saw professional North American Starcraft II players InControl, Scarlett, and Suppy playing Starcraft II between each other and with booth guests.BlizzCon-Intel-7428 BlizzCon-Intel-7429 BlizzCon-Intel-7430 BlizzCon-Intel-7426

Towards the end of the last day when the booth was less packed, we took a closer look at the new HP Omen laptops the pros were using. This newly announced laptop was revealed only a few days before BlizzCon following in the current trend of thin and light gaming laptops. Aggressive cooling supports an i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M with Optimus while carbon-like materials keep the weight under 5 lbs. The sharp, but minimalistic aesthetic keeps this HP laptop from looking as ostentatious as some other similarly priced $1300 gaming laptops out there. Opening the laptop lid to reveal a red-backlit keyboard with dedicated macro keys, large trackpad, and 1080p display resolution served to show off the HP Omen’s flavor.BlizzCon-Intel-7738

Intel was delighted to have this much attention from BlizzCon attendees, particularly from those who came to try out Hearthstone on the Intel based tablets. Many mentioned they were waiting for Hearthstone to be ported onto Android tablets, Android smartphones, and iPhones, but were still quite impressed how complete PC Windows systems could be built into compact tablet, ultraportable, and hybrid design forms. We too can appreciate what Intel did for the show and hope to see them soon again.

Noctua Releases Three 92mm Premium CPU Coolers

Noctua presents three new 92mm premium coolers

Noctua 92mm Coolers

Vienna, November 12th 2014 – Noctua today announced three new 92mm class CPU coolers. Whereas the NH-U9S and NH-D9L are retail models that succeed the popular NH-U9B SE2, the NH-D9DX i4 3U targets Intel Xeon LGA2011 based workstations and servers. All three models use the recently announced NF-A9 PWM 92mm premium fan to achieve class-leading quiet cooling performance.

“Providing a great balance between high efficiency and compact size, the NH-U9B SE2 is still one of our most popular models”, says Mag. Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). “The NH-U9S and NH-D9L stay true to this proven formula but now offer even better performance, better compatibility and PWM support for automatic fan speed control.”

Continuing the renowned legacy of Noctua’s award-winning NH-U9 series, the NH-U9S is a premium quality quiet CPU cooler in classic 9cm size. Its asymmetrical design with 5 heatpipes not only provides even better cooling performance than the previous generation but also improves compatibility: Thanks to its 95x95mm footprint, the NH-U9S clears the RAM and PCIe slots on all Intel and most AMD based mainboards, including µATX and ITX.

The NH-D9L features 4 heatpipes and is 15mm lower than classic 9cm coolers such as the NH-U9 series (110mm vs. 125mm), which doesn’t only guarantee full 3U compliance but also makes the NH-D9L ideal for compact HTPC and Small Form Factor cases that have airflow paths parallel to the mainboard. Like the NH-U9S, the NH-D9L has a 95x95mm footprint and thus provides 100% RAM and PCIe compatibility on all Intel and most AMD based mainboards.

The NH-D9DX i4 3U is the same heatsink as the NH-D9L but comes with LGA2011 mounting for both Square ILM and Narrow ILM Xeon platforms as well as support for LGA13x6.

“Our DX i4 series are renowned among builders of LGA2011 based Intel Xeon systems and one of the few available quiet cooling solutions for Narrow ILM platforms”, explains Mag. Roland Mossig (Noctua CEO). “With the new NH-D9DX i4 3U model, we can now offer a cooler for 3U cases that offers similar performance as the previous 4U model NH-U9DX i4.”

All three new models come with the new NF-A9 PWM for further improved quiet cooling performance. Topped off with the trusted, pro-grade SecuFirm2 mounting systems, Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound and full 6 years manufacturer’s warranty, the NH-U9S, NH-D9L and NH-D9DX i4 3U are premium grade solutions through and through.

Prices and availability

All three models are currently shipping and will be available shortly. The manufacturer suggested retail prices are as follows:

NH-U9S: EUR 54.90 / USD 59.90

NH-D9L: EUR 49.90 / USD 56.90

NH-D9DX i4 3U: EUR 56.90 / USD 59.90

About Noctua

Designed in Austria, Noctua’s premium cooling components are internationally renowned for their superb quietness, exceptional performance and thoroughgoing quality. Having received more than 3000 awards and recommendations from leading hardware websites and magazines, Noctua’s fans and heatsinks are chosen by more than a hundred thousand satisfied customers around the globe.

NVIDIA Announces Pick Your Path Game Title Promotion

NVIDIA and Ubisoft Take PC Gaming to New Heights

This Year’s Hottest Holiday Titles Available in New Exciting GeForce GTX “Pick Your Path” Promotion

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Nov. 4, 2014— NVIDIA today announced a new technology PC gaming development partnership with Ubisoft that will bring consumers closer to their games than ever before.

Thanks to the power of NVIDIA GeForce GTX technology, including the just-released GTX 980 and 970 GPUs, this holiday’s hottest games, Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 and The Crew, will look simply incredible. By integrating NVIDIA’s superior GameWorks technologies, such as HBAO+ for realistic shadows, TXAA for cinema quality smoothness, as well as enhanced 4K support, Ubisoft is delivering cutting-edge content that allow PC gamers to become fully immersed in their gaming environments.

Part of the “Pick Your Path” promotion which kicks off this week and runs to the end of the year, gamers who purchase a qualifying GeForce GTX GPU, including a GeForce GTX 980, 970, 780 Ti, or 780 graphics card or a notebook with GeForce GTX 980M or 970M get their choice of which title–The Crew, Far Cry 4 or Assassin’s Creed Unity–to add to their library for free.

“NVIDIA has worked hard, hand-in-hand with our development teams, to help provide the best experience for our PC players,” said Jean-Francois St.Amour, Lead Graphics Programmer at Ubisoft Montreal. “Their support and insight is even more important now, as we make a big technological leap into the next-generation of Assassin’s Creed games.”

Assassin’s Creed Unity, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s most successful franchise, will feature HBAO+, TXAA, PCSS and tessellation technologies which allow Ubisoft to realistically render the 16th century game environments, which are set in Paris during the French Revolution.

Another legendary game series getting a massively visual and technology upgrade is Far Cry 4. In addition to HBAO+, TXAA, PCSS and enhanced 4K support, Far Cry 4 also integrates NVIDIA Godrays technology so gamers can feel the sun beating down in the Himalayas, and NVIDIA HairWorks, for rendering the realistic, but deadly adversaries that will be encountered in the game.

And finally, if horsepower, engines and pound per cubic feet rev your receptors more, then The Crew, the ultimate street racing game ever made, may be just the ticket you’ve been waiting for. Motoring through the bustling streets of New York City and Los Angeles, cruising down sunny Miami Beach or trekking through the plateaus of Monument Valley never looked so superb thanks in part to the integration of HBAO+ and TXAA technologies– all rendered in breathtaking 4K. The Crew even comes with an Android companion app that lets you tinker with your ride before playing it live, chat remotely, browse friend profiles, and send your crew on jobs – all from the road.
