A new survey conducted by Google revealed that most users want separated profiles for life and work on their devices. The survey is carried out by Google’s user experience research team and an American experience management company Qualtrics. Their purpose is to see how people use their smartphones for work and life.

Google’s research team has surveyed over 3,000 smartphone owners who are using Android work profile features. This study proves that people are looking for separate devices for work and personal stuff. Google has also noticed this issue, and added personal/work tabs to Android 11.

“Across the various user groups surveyed, 70% said they’d prefer a user interface (UI phones that clearly separates work and personal apps and data, over a UI with no separation. Users mentioned that a clear delineation between work and personal apps and data can help them improve digital wellbeing and balance between their personal lives and their work.”

According to the Google survey, 68% of employees have only one smartphone to handle work and personal stuff. Also, disconnecting from work after hours is difficult for most people. This means people use their devices for work purposes even when they are not at work environment.

“Nearly two out of three employees (62%) always or very often use their phone for work while not at work. Google studies revealed. “And almost half of all employees use their phone for work right when they wake up, 40% continue doing so after work, and about a third use their phone for work on weekends.”

Employees want to have two devices for work and life

Separating personal devices from work can have several benefits. One of the most significant benefits is visible at employee productivity. In this way, only the work smartphone is at use, and personal notifications can not distract the employee.

Moreover, it has some security benefits for companies who are conservative about their data. Data breaches and flaws incorporate devices are the last things that a company wants, and it poses threats to the identity and integrity of an organization.

Of course, it’s not always about the company’s data. Monitoring personal data stored on work devices is another issue that employees may be concerned about. According to Google’s survey, “63% of work profile users are aware that work app usage (data captured on work apps) is visible to IT,  compared to only 39% of non-work profile users who also use work apps on their phone.”
