YouTube mobile app is picking up a new update that significantly changes the expanded video description UI. The new UI features more prominent Likes and Views counters. It also displays the accurate upload date information for the video.
The latest update doesn’t change the description UI in the main preview pane though. It’s only when you expand the video description by tapping the dropdown menu beside the video title that you will see the more prominent counters for Likes and Views. The unexpanded preview pane still shows the Likes and Unlikes counters in the traditional fashion with a matching icon. The buttons to share, download, and save the video are also still present below the video title and Views counter.
Notably, expanding the video description now hides the Unlikes counter. Perhaps, all the buttons are hidden when you tap that dropdown menu. So you can’t actually like, unlike, share, download, or save a video from this UI. You also can’t access the comments section or any other videos when you expand the description. So you might want to expand it only when you need to see the details about a video or access the links in the description. Well, that’s basically why you’d expand it anyway.
If you want to react with the video in any way – like/unlike it, share or save it, or put a comment – or scroll down to access more videos, you’ll need to collapse the expanded description. You can either tap that cross icon (×) just below the video playback or pull down the expanded description UI to collapse it.
The latest update for YouTube description UI is now rolling out widely
The latest YouTube description UI started appearing for some users a few weeks ago. It was probably a test run to try and find any bugs so the company could iron them out before pushing the update publicly. The test run was seemingly successful. The new UI is now rolling out widely across the world. Both Android and iOS mobile apps are picking up this change.
YouTube makes UI changes to its mobile apps quite frequently. It recently introduced a very complicated menu to change the playback quality of a video. Instead of resolution numbers like 144p, 240p, 360p, 480p, and so on, users now see fewer options in plain text. These are Auto, Higher Picture Quality, Data Saver, and Advanced. The last Advanced option still lets you access the traditional resolution numbers but it’s all very complicated.
As expected, users didn’t like this change. YouTube has ignored the users’ opinions so far. It now remains to be seen how users respond to the latest change to the expanded video description UI.
