New Instagram Scam Gets Accounts Banned For Money

Instagram hasn’t been making the headlines too much recently, but now it is. Unfortunately, it’s not for a good reason, as there’s a new Instagram scam that has just surfaced. According to Motherboard, people have been having their accounts unrightfully banned.

This new Instagram scam has earned scammers a lot of money

Having your account banned can be one of the most frustrating things you can go through, and this new Instagram scam is making the process harder. The mechanics of the scam revolves around the paying scammers to imitate the target account with a verified account.

The imitated account will then report the real account, saying that it violates an Instagram policy. When that happens, the target’s real account will then get banned. Some people have had their accounts banned for violating the suicide and self-harm policy.

One reason why this works is because Instagram only requires the reporting account to have a human as the profile picture. This makes it easy for the scammer to imitate the real account.

People have also been able to retrieve their banned accounts

Another new Instagram scam sees the opposite happening; people would pay these scammers a hefty sum of money to have their banned accounts reinstated. The scammers would charge between $3,500 and $4,000 to have their accounts reclaimed.

Theoretically, a scammer could charge a person to ban an account, then they could charge the target account to get their account back. This sounds like a vicious cycle where the scammer comes out on top.

While banning and reclaiming accounts sounds shady, scammers have been able to accrue between five and six figures a month (between $10,000 and $999,999). Even though there’s no way of proving this, Instagram has a large user base, so there’s always the chance that this is true. Scammers told Motherboard that they made banning people a full-time job.

These new Instagram scams use loopholes in Instagram’s algorithm to ban innocent users’ accounts. They also bring back potentially guilty users’ accounts (accounts that actually violated Instagram’s policies).

We’re not sure if Instagram is aware

Instagram has yet to comment on this issue, and we’re not sure if the company is even aware of this. Right now, it’s focusing on building up its video department, so it already has a lot on its plate. However, these scams could damage the whole Instagram experience for a lot of users.

If these scammers are making that much money, this means that a lot of people are getting their accounts banned. Hopefully, Instagram does something about these scams.
