We all knew this was coming. In a forum post, Gary C, the OxygenOS product lead, stated that OnePlus and OPPO would be merging their respective Android skins. This OxygenOS and ColorOS merger comes shortly after the two companies announced their company merger.
The companies will be implementing these changes “behind the scenes”
Over the past couple of years, smartphone enthusiasts have remarked on the similarities between OnePlus and OPPO phones. These similarities are because the two companies share the same parent company, BBK Electronics. The two companies share resources for their phones, leading to sometimes identical looking devices.
Not too long ago, OnePlus and OPPO started integrating more of their teams on a deep level. Basically, the two companies are slowly merging. This is a slow process, as they remain as two separate entities.
In the forum post, Gary stated that the companies are going to be merging the codebase for their Android skins. While this seems like a massive overhaul of the software, he also stated that it will be happening behind the scenes. This means that users shouldn’t be able to notice any differences in day-to-day usage.
The OxygenOS and ColorOS merger will help ensure 3 software updates for OnePlus devices
One of the main benefits of this merger has to do with software updates. Even though OnePlus came up a lot since 2015, it’s still a relatively small company compared to most of the competition. It’s smaller size makes it rather difficult to offer software updates.
The OxygenOS and ColorOS merger gives OnePlus access to more people, R&D, and other resources to make the process more streamlined. With this comes the promise of more software updates for current devices.
The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 9 series’ of phones are getting three years of major Android updates with four years of security updates. Flagship phones older than those will stay on the old schedule of two years of software updates.
The OnePlus Nord and Nord CE will get two years of major Android updates with three years of security updates. The OnePlus Nord N series of phones will get one major Android update and three years of security updates.
A few years ago, OnePlus was one of the best companies when it came to timely software updates, but it’s slipped since then. Now, the company is delivering software updates months after the official roll-outs. Hopefully this OxygenOS and ColorOS merger will help OnePlus deliver more timely updates.
