Instagram To Experiment With More Video Features

The war among social media platforms is heating up as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat are competing when it comes to short video content. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, just posted a video stating that they will be experimenting with new Instagram video features in the coming months.

Mosseri says that Instagram is “no longer a photo-sharing app”

In the two minute video, Mosseri outlined the four areas that Instagram is looking to focus on. They are creators, videos, shopping and messaging. He centered around video for his speech, talking about how much competition there is in the social media space (namely, TikTok and YouTube.)

He said that Instagram is no longer a photo-sharing app. Based on research conducted on users, the #1 reason that people use Instagram is to be entertained. He didn’t really go into detail about that, but what it points to is the fact that people go to Instagram to consume entertaining content, not just photos.

The addition of Instagram stories, Reels, and IGTV has pegged Instagram as a bona fide video platform. This is why Mosseri says that the company is going to lean more towards video.

The company has been testing new recommendations

One area where Instagram has started rolling out changes is with recommendations. Mosseri said that the company has been testing it last week, with a new version coming around this week. He didn’t say whether Instagram is testing this with a beta program, or if it’s public.

There will be new Instagram video features coming

Even with the recommendations, it’s going to be a while before we see anything really new to the platform. The company just had its all-hands meeting where the new features were discussed. Based on what Mosseri said, we shouldn’t really expect to see any new Instagram video features until a few months from now.

He didn’t elaborate on any specific ideas that are in the works, but he did say that the company wants to focus on more “full screen” and “mobile first” video content. Being able to post longer and full screen videos are already a part of IGTV. This brings into question what fun and new features the company is planning on.

Putting video into the spotlight should prove to be a boon for content creators that use the platform. Even though Tik-Tok and YouTube have a bigger share of the video market, Instagram is still a go-to platform for models, comic artists, photographers, and cinematographers. It’ll be interesting to see what new features that Instagram plans on bringing to the platform.
