Samsung launched the Galaxy S21 series at a lower price than the Galaxy S20. The entire lineup saw a $200 price drop this year and that significantly boosted the sales of the new flagships. It appears the Korean firm plans to follow a similar strategy for its upcoming foldables as well. According to a new SamMobile report, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will be substantially cheaper than their predecessors.
As per the report, we are looking at up to 20 percent lower launch price of the new foldables. So that means the top-of-the-line Galaxy Z Fold 3 could debut for just around $1,600. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 arrived in September last year for $1,999.
The Galaxy Z Flip 2 could also launch with a price tag somewhere around $1,100. The original Galaxy Z Flip was priced at $1,380 when it launched in February last year.
Of course, these are not the exact prices of the new foldables but calculated guesses based on the report. Also, pricing will likely vary from country to country. But, in all probability, the upcoming Samsung foldables will be significantly cheaper than last year’s models.
Samsung is looking to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Flip 3 at cheaper prices
Samsung is betting heavily on foldable smartphones as the mobile devices of the future. The company has already gained a huge headstart over its rivals in this market and is looking to build on that. However, consumer adoption of foldable smartphones is still relatively low as compared to mainstream flagships. There are a couple of significant reasons behind that. Firstly, foldable smartphones aren’t as much durable as conventional smartphones. In addition, they are expensive. Samsung is now looking to address both these disadvantages up to some extent with its next-gen offerings.
Multiple leaks over the past few months have suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 will boast significant improvements over their predecessors, both in terms of features and durability. We will likely get newer and stronger frames as well as a more scratch-resistant foldable display. Samsung may also introduce a newer hinge mechanism to keep dust out. All these changes already make the new propositions more valuable than last year’s models.
Now, the latest report suggests that we could be in for a price cut of up to $400 as well. That could significantly boost the sales of the new foldables, as we’ve seen with the Galaxy S21 series. A report last month suggested that Samsung is aiming to ship around three million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and four million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It now remains to be seen whether the company manages to achieve those targets. A lot will depend on how it prices the new foldables.
Samsung has yet to reveal when it plans to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. We will likely get to know more about the new devices in the coming weeks as we inch closer to their official introduction.
