All choices have consequences. The only question is, what consequences can you live with? With the rapid rise of Covid-19 cases, Malaysians have been calling for a lockdown. However, many have argued that another lockdown will not only kill the economy but leave the unprivileged struggling.
Citizens have been doing their best to help, but there is only so much they can do. In a fit of desperation, someone has taken to Twitter to beg the Agong for help.
Twitter user kucitara kucha posted a video last night of a call he had received. The caller was explaining his opinion and requested the parliament be restored. He started begging the sultans for help midway through the call. “I ask the Malay kings to look at the citizens below them,” he said. “(Please) intervene, we ask (you kings) for help.”
The caller not only appealed to the sultans, he also addressed the Agong. “Please, Your Highness,” he pleaded. “Your people are suffering.” The man abruptly broke down, crying out that he too was facing the repercussions of pandemic. “I can’t even pay for my car bills!” he exclaimed. “I have no money! How am I to live?” With the total lockdown looming on the horizon, the caller feels more distressed.
He explained he was not the only one facing such situations. With the lack of resources and help, the caller feels at his wits end. He begged the Agong and sultans one last time for help, saying, “The sultans are the people’s umbrella. So please. Please help your people under you! Listen to the cry of your people. A government under emergency is the Agong’s government!”
The post was made after Sarawak PKR member Iswardy Morni was arrested for allegedly insulting the sultan. Twitter user kucitara kucha captioned the video as “If Your Highness will not listen to Iswardy’s words, listen to this. Listen to the voices of your people, Your Highness…”
Many Twitter users have taken to echoing the caller’s words. They sympathised with him, feeling moved by his pleas. Some also reached out to kucitara kucha, asking if they could help the caller. He explained that he and a few others have been doing what they can to help those in need.
