The days of mid-range smartphones being associated with sluggish performance and under-powered processors could be coming to an end, Samsung looks to be working on two new processors in preparation for 2016. According to reports out of South Korea, the Exynos 7880 and the Exynos 7650 are new processors that will be used in the next generation of Galaxy smartphones, specifically the mid-range line of Galaxy smartphones such as the Galaxy A series.
The Exynos 7880, which looks to be the higher end of the two will be a 28nm, 64-bit chip with a 1.8GHz Cortex-A72 + 1.3GHz Cortex-A52 heterogeneous (big.LITTLE) configuration which will also have an ARM Mali-T860MP4 GPU. The second processor, the Exynos 7650 will also be a 28nm, 64-bit chip, with a 1.7Ghz Cortex-A72 + 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 big.LITTLE configuration but it will use the ARM Mali-T860MP3 GPU instead.
big.LITTLE configurations are a combination of low and high-power processors developed by ARM. This creates a multi-core processor that adjusts dynamically according to the task that the user is doing, so it will switch to the higher-clocked processor for tasks like games and video, and the lower clocked processor for tasks like web browsing and social media, with these processing cores using less power and resulting in better battery life.
Both the Exynos 7650 and the Exynos 7880 look like they will be significant upgrades over the current generation of processors found in today’s mid range Samsung smartphones, and by incorporating a 64-bit chip, which are usually found in more higher-end flagship smartphones into these future mid range devices could possibly make them a viable option to users who are planning to upgrade but do not want to spend a fortune on a flagship device just to get good specs.
It will certainly be interesting to see how manufacturers like Qualcomm will respond to this and what their plans for 2016 will be to stay competitive, especially in the mid range segment of the market. Samsung is expected to use both processors for their 2016 lineup of Galaxy smartphones, more specifically focused on the mid range segment of the market. One of it would be the Galaxy A series, which is the more premium of all the other mid range Galaxy smartphones.
