Samsung Considering Options in SanDisk Buyout

SanDisk, the firm behind many of the microSD cards a lot of Android users take advantage of as well as SSDs used in laptops and Desktop PCs is apparently looking for a buyer. It would appear that SanDisk isn’t quite doing as well as we’d imagine, which is interesting considering the business of selling microSD cards and other such storage has to be a high-margin game, but nonetheless the company is reportedly looking for a buyer. Of course, the natural fit for someone like SanDisk would be another big-name player in the storage game like Western Digital or Seagate, but it would appear that Samsung might be considering a bid, too.

According to Business Korea, Samsung is weighing up their options when it comes to purchasing SanDisk, and would think carefully before entering a bid or making a move to secure the company. Samsung tried purchasing SanDisk back in 2008, but back then SanDisk weren’t interested and things fell apart. Considering that Samsung also makes SSDs as well as microSD cards and SD cards, it would make sense for these two to join forces. Much like another Korean firm known for RAM and storage, SK Hynix, Samsung has become a big player in the UFS storage space, something that SanDisk has been struggling to compete against. As analysts predict UFS-based storage to take the market by storm come 2018/2019 it’s no wonder SanDisk is looking ahead to the future.

Just what Samsung would get out of the deal is of course unclear, but it could be a big move for the Korean giant. Samsung is in the unique position of creating a lot of the key components that end up in their smartphones, such as the processor, the memory, storage, display and more. With SanDisk under their wing they would be adopting a fairly successful side business, while perhaps gaining better manufacturing and knowhow for their own competing products. As of right now, all of this is conjecture, but we could learn more in the coming weeks as SanDisk start to look for a buyer in earnest.
