MediaTek Teases 32-Megapixel Selfies Using Helio X20 CPU

When it comes to the world of mobile processors, there are but a few major players that can deliver the sort of performance and features that we’ve come to expect, while also delivering all of this at massive scale to keep up with demand. For a long time now, this has been Qualcomm with their Snapdragon line, but MediaTek has been making big waves out of China for the past three years or so, and with their upcoming Helio X20 processor they hope to hit the high-end. The MediaTek Helio X10 processor was launched earlier this year, and has appeared in a number of devices already, but it looks like the Chinese company is looking to tease the Helio X20 which will launch in December later this year.

Judging from the simple teaser on Twitter, you might be wondering why we know this is the X20 they’re talking about, that’s because the X20 can support cameras up to 32-megapixels, while the X10 “makes do” with just 21-megapixel cameras. Both chips are impressive, but the X20 is the Helio flagship, and devices that feature said processor should be some of the fastest available on the market. The Helio X20 runs three clusters of processors, making for a total of 10 CPU cores. These are comprised of 4 Cortex-A53 processors at 1.4 Ghz for light-load, everyday processing and another 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0 Ghz for increased load. The last two processors however, are ARM’s Cortex-A72 CPUs clocked at a whopping 2.5 Ghz. All of these clusters are 64-bit, and each one can be used independently for better efficiency and overall battery life.

The claim of 32-megapixel selfies will have to wait however, as there’s currently no single-sensor solution ready for the primetime, at least not yet. Either way, the Helio X20 looks excellent on paper in terms of both performance as well as battery life and should certainly give Qualcomm something to worry about. The MediaTek line of processors have been enabling low-end devices to punch well above their weight for years now, and the X20 should be able to create high-end performance in packages that cost a whole lot less, and we can’t wait.
