You may remember that back at Google I/O last year, Google announced the Google Play Beta program. Basically allowing devs to have Beta and Alpha versions of their app. And that users in a specific Google+ Community or Google Group would have access to that beta. Basically a way for Google to get more people using Google+, but also to keep users from needing to download APK’s elsewhere and sideloading them on their phone. A number of apps have started doing this, and now some of the larger apps are even doing betas, like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Now the latest app to join them? VLC for Android.
Today, VLC announced version 1.1 of their app, which is only available for beta testers on Google+. So you’ll need to sign up on this Google+ Community first before you’ll get the test version. It’s important to note that it can take some time for the app to realize that you have signed up for the beta test group. As usual, servers don’t talk to each other as quickly as we’d like. In fact, I just signed up for the community and went to download it “incompatible with all your devices” and mind you, since I review most of the smartphones and tablets for us, there’s a lot listed there. So just give it a few minutes and you should be able to download it.
There’s no official changelog for version 1.1 just yet, but it appears as if the update goes material, and it looks quite nice and even bright. Since it is orange. Other than the material design, there doesn’t seem to be any really big changes with VLC for Android in v1.1. However, there are likely bug fixes as usual. Betas are always fun, but it’s important to remember that there may be some bugs, and even a few Force Closes along the way, but that’s the joy of a beta.
