The Nexus 6 is here and now it’s time to make decisions. This time around we are talking about a super high-end device with an amazing build quality, sleek design and top-of-the-line specs… but it’s not the right phone for everyone.
The Nexus 6 is amazingly large with a 5.96-inch screen. Not to mention the fact that it is priced similarly to other high-end devices, whereas other Nexus devices were very affordable. The Nexus 6 falls under a completely different spectrum.
We also know many of you would rather stick with Nexus devices. With that in mind, it’s important to compare the Nexus 6 to the Nexus 5. Will you be adventurous and go for the super-sized Nexus 6, or will you play it safe and get the older, yet awesome Nexus 5?

Design and build quality
These devices are worlds apart in terms of design. LG did a great job with the Nexus 5, making a sleek and clean device that proved devices don’t need metal to feel great. What Motorola did with the Nexus 6 is also amazing, though.
The metal frame and plastic combination makes for an amazing feeling smartphone. It’s solid and looks very good, but so does the Nexus 5. In the end, both are great devices and both look awesome.
The main difference in design is in size, of course. Some of us love larger devices like the Nexus 6, while others may prefer the smaller, more pocketable Nexus 5.
Display
Both devices have great displays, but the Nexus 6 is the obvious winner here. Without considering size, the Nexus 6 simply has a better display here. The definition is simply incomparable, as the Nexus 6 is one of the first devices to offer a QHD (2560x1440p) screen.
The Nexus 6 also sports a Super AMOLED panel, which is a type of screen that is loved by many. On the other hand, the Nexus 5’s IPC LCD display does offer more natural colors, which is why photographers and content creators love IPS panels.
Performance and software
The Nexus 5 is a perfectly capable and powerful device by today’s standards. In fact, I have heard many fellow bloggers it may still be the fastest device around. Not for long, though.
The Nexus 6 brings the same software and pure Google experience (which is known for its speed and light weight) and brings forth even stronger specs. Though that QHD display is definitely going to take some strength out of the processor, the Nexus 6 does sport a newer and stronger Snapdragon 805 processor.
Not to mention that extra GB of RAM, which will make multi-tasking much faster and smoother in the Nexus 6. As for the software, they are both NExus devices and willb e getting the latest updates at around the same time.
Camera
We don’t expect either devices to outperform the best camera phones out there. In fact, the Nexus 5 camera was never known for being great. This puts the Nexus 6 ahead of the previous iteration, with a 13 MP camera that should easily beat the Nexus 5’s 8 MP sensor.
Battery life
The Nexus 5 is usually able to pull off about 15 hours of battery life on average usage (with Android 5.0 Lollipop). This are amazing hours for a device with only a 2300 mAh battery. We can thank the software for much of that, but the Nexus 6 is coming in at full steam with a huge battery.
Even though it may have a massive QHD display and powerful specs, the Nexus 6’s 3220 mAh battery should push the Nexus 6′ battery life to well over a day of usage. Maybe even two with light usage.
Price
I added this section because these phones are not exactly competing with each other in every way. In terms of price, they are worlds apart. The Nexus 6 broke away from the tradition of selling Nexus devices at super affordable prices, while offering awesome specs.
The Nexus 6 offers even better specs this time around, but the price has been raised to match the high-end smartphones in the market. The Nexus 6 won’t be cheap at $649, while the Nexus 5 continues to be a great deal (even now) at only $349.
The Nexus 5 has gone out of stock at the Google Play Store. But we are sure you can still find it from other outlets.
Conclusion
The Nexus 6 clearly wins in most departments, but this time the comparison is a little unfair. I believe the size factor will play a huge role in your decision. Even if the Nexus 6 was 2 or 3 times better, sometimes having a comfortable smartphone is much more important.
That said, if you want a pocketable device that fits better in your hands, go for the Nexus 5. If you don’t mind the size increase (I happen to love larger phones), then the Nexus 6 will be a better device all around.
