While Sundar Pichai settles into his new roles that have been given to him by Google CEO Larry Page, Andy Rubin, the well known co-founder of Android, which Pichai has been running for a while now, has decided to leave Google in pursuit of starting up a hardware technology incubator. The Wall Street Journal reports that Rubin will be leaving the search company and his position overseeing robotics outside of Google’s X lab. Right now there isn’t a whole lot of detail as to the exact specifics about Rubin’s decision to venture out onto his own path as the story is still developing.

James Kuffner, who is a current research scientist with Google will be taking over Rubin’s roles, while Rubin sets out to go his own direction. Android has come a long way since it began as Rubin’s project, but whatever he ends up doing going forward it will more than likely be something exciting. As exciting as Android? Who knows, as we have no idea what his plans are. Reports about Rubin’s departure have apparently been confirmed by Google with Page stating that he wishes Rubin the best on whatever he has planned next. He further went on to say that Rubin created something truly remarkable with Android and we’re certainly inclined to agree.

The exit from Google by Rubin comes as we’re about to see a release of some of the most exciting milestones in Android, with the launch of the new Nexus 6 and the Nexus 9, and Android next version of software, Android 5.0 Lollipop. Today’s Android may not be quite the same as the Android we know from when Rubin sold Android Inc. to Google years ago, but that is only on the surface, as deep down it’s still very much the Android it has always been, with a deep tie to open sourced creativity and innovative technology to enrich the way we use our smartphones. With Andy Rubin now gone, and Sundar Pichai completely at the Android helm, we’re eager to see where things go and how whatever Rubin does in the future might play into the Android ecosystem. What are your thoughts on Andy Rubin leaving?
