OnePlus takes us behind the scenes – Is their future as amazing as their headquarters?

Nicole Scott takes a load off at the OnePlus offices in Shenzhen China.

Something hits you when you land in Shenzhen. The southern Chinese metropolis is a monster with about 15 million inhabitants. Home of many tech giants, it is considered the Mecca of technology in Asia. A successful company needs a successful home, and OnePlus couldn’t have found a better place to cement its headquarters in.

Those familiar with the OnePlus One (or any OnePlus products) will feel right at home with the aesthetics of the company’s offices. It’s spacious, clean, simple, fun and welcoming, with a very unique and diverse crowd. This is the same team that would create one of the most important smartphones of 2014, and they tell us there’s ample room to fit more people here.

OnePlus is definitely planning to expand. The company arrived at these offices with about a 100 employees, a number that has been growing along with the demand for their OnePlus One. From these offices, they were able to create a flagship device that beats the competition in many ways, while keeping the price lower than we would ever imagine.

It’s amazingly hard to win against the OnePlus One. Such is the power of Chinese business and engineering. If OnePlus can follow this road in the coming years, we can assure these offices will soon be packed, creating the heartbeat for a stream of OnePlus devices across the world.

OnePlus has had its challenges, though, and that is something they haven’t been shy about. In the video we are told OnePlus definitely didn’t expect to be welcomed with such demand. OnePlus’ invite system has helped. OnePlus’ plan is to take things slow so they are able to keep their users satisfied and handle their already high demand.

So, what is OnePlus’ future like?

We asked about the OnePlus Two and were told the company is simply focusing on getting the OnePlus One to as many people as possible, but they are definitely looking into the future. What they do in the coming months will define their upcoming success, as well as their position in Shenzhen and the world.

We don’t know what is going on in these global weekly meetings, but we can definitely look back and point out where we would like OnePlus to improve.

Improve delays

We know your demand is high and issues arise, but that is why you have this invite system in place. Not to mention, it seems delays come much more often than we would expect. It certainly doesn’t look good to limit availability just to make sure everything runs smoothly, only to have things, well… not run smoothly.

Try not to cancel products

This only happened with the OnePlus One back covers, but these were accessories your audience was really looking forward to. In my case, it would have been one of the main reasons why I considered buying a OnePlus One. That level of customization and personalization is important to users.

You have a killer device a price that can’t be beat, but sometimes customers are willing to pay extra for a device that “fits their style”. Without these back plates, those who really care about looks will likely move to something like the Moto X, even if it is much less of a deal.

I just really wanted those wooden backs, OnePlus!

Think your contests more thoroughly

None of us will ever forget the Smash the Past and Ladies First contests. We understand your intentions were never to offend anyone and you simply wanted to get people involved. Of course, some marketing was also part of the equation, which is not bad either.

Just realize you are dealing with the western market here, and we tend to take such topics very seriously. You owned up to your mistakes and fixed the issues right away, though. That proves your company has their mind in the right place for a successful future.

Get packaging right

I like getting my phones in their own boxes and with all their included accessories. It was a bit messy during your first shipping round, when you would send the device in a less-than-favorable package, only to send the official box and charger some time after.

Users were left without an official charger! It’s 2014 and all of us probably already have microUSB chargers. If some users don’t, they can easily buy them for a few bucks. Thing is, users shouldn’t have to worry about finding a way to charge their brand new devices.

Final thoughts – people don’t forget

Notice that none of these negative points are about the device itself. OnePlus has done a great job as a manufacturer, but people expect more from a retailer and company. The OnePlus One continues to be among the best smartphones out there, while still being one of the cheapest. You can see our OnePlus One review to learn out full thoughts on this device (hint: we love it).

OnePlus will be a very important manufacturer for both China and the world. They have accomplished amazing things and have a fresh and honest attitude in a market full of crazy corporations.

Nice place, though! Those offices are not only awesome, but they will be the home of many awesome products to come. Just try to get the little details right. As you can see above, people may sometimes settle, but they definitely never forget.
