Google rolled Voice into Hangouts a few weeks back. Although the transition was a little wonky, things have been smooth for me since the changes took place. Some users haven’t been having such a good time, though, at least on the Hangouts for Chrome extension. Beginning on September 12, some users began reporting that their Google Voice SMS and voicemail messages were not coming through to the desktop. The messages were still there because they could be seen in the Hangouts app in Gmail, Google+, and on the mobile app. It was just the Hangouts for Chrome extension that was dropping the proverbial ball. Google has addressed the issue and provided a fix.
The happy news broke yesterday in the Google Groups thread created to report the bug. A community manager named Chris left this message: “I just received word that the team has been able to resolve the issue around Voicemail for Hangouts in Chrome. At your earliest convenience, could you please sign in/sign out, clear your cache & cookies, and try again?” So there you have it. If you’ve been having issues seeing your voicemails and SMS in Hangouts, simply log out of the extension and log back in again. The problem should be fixed. If that doesn’t take care of it for you, log out, clear your browser cache and cookies, then log back in again. Keep in mind that you’ll need to have checked the box to enable this feature in the first place. Just open the Hangouts extension, click the small arrow to the right of where it says New Hangout, and then scroll all the way to the bottom. There’s a section that says Google Voice. Check the “Receive SMS and Voicemail in Hangouts” box and you’ll be all set.
As you can see by the timestamp in the above screenshot, I haven’t had any issues with these messages in Hangouts. I was directing my father-in-law to a questionable NFL streaming site last Sunday. For those of you that have been experiencing issues, you can now fix that and begin taking full advantage of the Voice/Hangouts integration that Google has bestowed upon us. Did this bug affect you?
