HP is apparently on track to launch a device that can multitask as a few different device types, so if you have need for computer, an Android tablet, or an extra monitor than the HP Slate 17 is worth looking into. The system still runs Android 4.4 Kit Kat out of the box so there’s no onboard Windows like one might expect, but it has full capabilities to hook up with a keyboard and wireless Bluetooth mouse, and it has the ability to prop upright so it can still feel like a real desktop user experience even if it’s not running a traditional desktop OS.
Essentially it’s a large Android tablet, which could be great for activities like Hulu Plus or any other types of media streaming. Working off of the device using apps like Google Docs or other office type apps should also be a huge plus on a device with a screen this large. The most intriguing feature though is the ability to hook it up and use it as a second monitor. HP has used some Nvidia processors in some of their latest All-in-ones, as well as one of their new upcoming Chromebooks which will be sporting an Nvidia Tegra K1 CPU. The HP Slate 17 though will opt instead for a Celeron CPU made by Intel.
It also reportedly packs in a 720p display resolution with built in webcam, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, an HDMI port, a USB 2.0 port, and 2GB of RAM. The display size of course is 17-inches perhaps given away by the name of the device, and it’s full touch, another obvious detail but still we love to mention it. Propping up the HP Slate 17 has some variation to it depending on what you might be doing, or however you feel most comfortable using it, as there are two built-in kickstands on the back. One for standing it up at more of a vertical angle, and another smaller one for getting it propped only slightly from a laying flat position. The HP Slate 17 isn’t quite yet available, but it’s expected to launch in the U.S. market sometime in the near future, and when it launches it will cost around $470 according to Mobile Geeks. If you have need for an All-In-One device and you prefer it to run Android, this might be the perfect device as the smaller size gives great portability.
