The smart phone battleground has shifted to the affordable segment and Acer has joined the ring with its new Liquid X1. With the ambition of becoming a Top 5 smart phone brand in Taiwan, the Liquid X1 is packing decent specs for an affordable price of TWD$7,990, which is about RM842.

It gets a 5.7″ IPS HD 720p display and underneath, it runs on a 1.7GHz Octa-Core MediaTek MT6592 processor with 2GB of RAM which is a similar combination that’s powering the Redmi Note. On top of that, it also has 16GB of on-board storage, a microSD card slot, a 13MP f/1.8 main camera and a 2,700mAh capacity battery. For faster internet connectivity, the Liquid X1 also supports 4G LTE with speeds up to 150Mbps.

Despite being a large 5.7″ phablet, the Liquid X1 is lighter and thinner than the Redmi Note at 164 grams and is 8.5mm thick. Design wise, it has a leather-like texture at the back with a dimpled look that’s probably inspired by the Galaxy S5.

Out of the box, it is running on Android 4.4 KitKat and Acer has included a couple of neat features including ASUS Extend, where you can view your smart phone from a desktop computer. For those who find the 5.7″ screen too big, there’s a Zoom Fit feature where you can reduce the size of the display for one handed operation. For taking pictures, the Liquid X1 boast a fast focusing time of 0.3 seconds and there’s a selective focus mode called Free Focus.

It is available in Taiwan with 2 colour options – Black and Red. So far no word on its international release but this looks quite appealing as an affordable 4G LTE smart phone with a large display. If you’re a considering a smart phone that’s a notch above the Redmi Note, this is worth taking a look.
