The Galaxy Note 9 is picking up a new software update that introduces the latest, August 2021 Android security patch to the device. The 2018 S Pen wielding Samsung flagship is currently receiving the new update in Germany and the US. Yes, the update is already available to users stateside. First rolled out to users on Xfinity Mobile, it’s now also available on T-Mobile, Sprint, and other carriers, as well as on unlocked units.
The latest update for the Galaxy Note 9 comes with the firmware versions N960FXXS9FUH1 and N960USQS9FUF1 in Europe and the US respectively, though that can vary with the market and the carrier. In either case, this update is unlikely to bring anything else apart from this month’s vulnerability fixes.
Samsung recently revealed that the August security patch contains fixes for over 40 issues found in both Google’s version of Android as well as the company’s custom skin, i.e. One UI. At least two of them were critical vulnerabilities.
This could be the last monthly update for the Galaxy Note 9
Per Samsung’s software support policy, all of its smartphones and tablets will receive four years of security updates. However, the frequency of those updates will decrease as they get older. Depending on their age and model, Galaxy devices receive updates monthly, quarterly, or biannually (two updates in a year).
Launched in August 2018, the Galaxy Note 9 is about to complete three years in the market soon. It is the oldest Galaxy device receiving monthly security updates. However, that could change soon and Samsung might demote it to the quarterly schedule going forward. Nonetheless, if you’re rocking a Galaxy Note 9, you can rest assured that your phone will receive security updates for at least one more year.
That said, Samsung has been killing it when it comes to software updates recently. It recently surprised everyone when it pushed a new security update to the Galaxy S8 series. The devices had already completed four years in the market and the company had removed them from its software update list. So anything is possible.
As said earlier, Galaxy Note 9 users in Germany and the US should now be able to download the August update over the air (OTA). The rollout should expand to more regions over the next few days. You should receive a notification prompting you to download the OTA file once it becomes available for your unit. You can also check for updates from the phone’s Settings app.
