Here's What Carl Pei's Newly Launched Nothing Ear (1) Has To Offer

Carl Pei’s new company, Nothing, has now officially launched its “ear (1)” true-wireless earbuds, complete with pricing and availability information for the new wearable.

Now, the design of the new earbuds has already leaked and been teased plenty so there aren’t any surprises on that front. Built around an apparent philosophy of transparency, the carry case and buds are both see-through. Effectively showing off everything that’s on the inside. But the design here isn’t coincidental or without purpose. It’s what’s on the inside that really matters for these earbuds.

There are, however, a few new details about the hardware itself that is well worth discussing. For starters, the earbuds weigh just 4.7g and include vents for relieving pressure built up by ANC and the snug but comfortable fit. The company is including three customizable liquid silicone tips as well. And is using a red coloration on the inside to designate the right bud from the left.

Find My Earbud, EQ settings, customization of gestures and ANC are part of the build too. Accessible via the ear (1) App. And In-Ear Detection and Fast Pairing are part of the bundle as well as sweat and water splash resistance.

What are Nothing ear (1) earbuds and what do they bring to the table?

The headlining feature for Nothing ear (1) earbuds, aside from that they’ve officially been launched now, is all internal.

Not only did the company utilize an 11.6mm driver with tuning by audiophile experts at Teenage Engineering. With special attention given to balance on both the hardware and software fronts, according to Nothing. The company also opted to utilize the latest in Bluetooth technology. Specifically, Bluetooth 5.2 for better range, audio quality, and battery efficiency, among other things.

Taken as a package deal, that should equate to spectacular sound for the money. Especially since these buds also pack in Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with two modes. Users can select between Light mode for better efficiency and cancellation in quieter environments. Or switch over to Maximum mode for louder environments — which Nothing lists as places like on an airplane or at the office.

That mode comes coupled with Transparency mode too, acting as an audio pass-through for better situational awareness. Or just to let a conversation seep through past the music or other playback as needed. And that’s accented further by Clear Voice Technology which Nothing says will help to cancel out wind and other background noise during calls.

Finally, Nothing claims its newly launched ear (1) earbuds will last up to 5.7-hours on a single charge. That charge, by the way, is “ultra-fast” with up to 8-hours of listening on a 10-minute charge as far as the case is concerned. And up to 34-hours of listening, in total, including the charging case. That’s despite the fact that Nothing ear (1) charges wirelessly via any Qi standard charger.

How much do these cost and where can you get them?

In terms of pricing and availability, Nothing is aiming to make these new wearables as affordable as possible too. The company set the price at just £99 GBP. That’s roughly $136, although previous reports have indicated that they’ll sell for $99 in the US region.

Nothing ear (1) will be available starting on July 31 in limited supply via the company’s website. Specifically, at 2:00 PM Tuesday, British Summer Time (BST). That’s 6:00 AM Pacific Time. Sales across other retailers, online and off, for the UK, USA, and Canada, as well as 45 countries and regions, will kick off on August 17.
