You Might Be Able To Control YouTube Videos On The Home Screen

YouTube introduced a feature that auto-plays videos on the homescreen a while back. Now, the company might be in the process of giving the user more control over those videos. A recent tweet was postsed that showed a user with the ability to control YouTube autoplay videos. The tweet was spotted by XDA Developers.

This new feature gives you very basic controls of the autoplay videos

When you are scrolling through your YouTube feed, videos will autoplay as you scroll. For the time being, the only way to interact with them is by tapping on them. Sometimes, users want to have some control over them without having to open them up. For example, if you’re listening to music in a certain app, and you want to be able to have some control over the video without having it stopping your music.

This new feature could come in handy for folks who want to be able to control YouTube autoplay videos from the home screen. In the tweet, the user had a few very basic controls over the videos. We see the option to toggle the closed caption, mute/unmute, and scrub through the video.

There are some significant details in the video

There are a couple of things to note in the video. Firstly, when a new app or update is launched across smartphone operating systems, it usually hits iOS users first, then Android. In the video, the user is using a Pixel 4a running Android 12. That raises a few questions as to the source of this version of YouTube.

Next, when the user tries to mute the video, it does not respond. This could point to an unstable version of the app. This means that the version is possibly not meant to be out, which could mean that it’s not part of an ongoing roll-out. If this is true, the user might be using a leaked beta of the YouTube app. This is speculation, however.

The ability to control YouTube autoplay videos looks to be in the really early stages

In any case, if this feature is to roll out to phones in the near future, it’s most likely in the really early stages of development. At this point, it’s hard to tell if YouTube will even be launching this feature. The company is probably still in the process of testing it out, so we may not hear about it again for a while.

Since it’s in such an early stage, it’s also unclear whether we’ll see additional functionality added to this feature. Being able to control YouTube autoplay videos could be even better than what we see in the video. Some great additions to the platform would be the ability to play/pause videos and the ability to like/dislike videos without even opening them up.
