The Time Is Now – Stadia For Android TV Is Live

Google Stadia Lifestyle 5

If you’re the proud owner of an Android TV device and a Stadia subscriber, you may already be aware that Stadia is live on Android TV devices at this point. Google officially launched the Stadia app for Android TV and Google TV on June 23. Which was yesterday.

But, on the off chance that you somehow didn’t know the app went live, you can now install it from the Play Store. Google launched Stadia back in 2019 and at the time, it was available on only three devices. The Chromecast Ultra, a few select Android devices (Pixel phones), and Chrome web browsers. Which in turn meant Chromebooks would work as the hardware.

But, there was no official support for Android TV. Or what would end up the new Chromecast with Google TV when it was launched the following year. Now more than a year and a half later, both users of both device types can finally use Stadia on those devices properly.

Stadia only supports some Android TV devices right now

The good news is Android TV is now officially supported. The bad news is that not all devices have that support. At the moment there are around 13 Android TV devices that can officially play games on Google cloud gaming service.

This includes the U7G, U8G, and U9G HiSense TVs, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV PRO, the Onn FHD Streaming Stick and UHD Streaming Device, the Philips 8215, 8505, and OLED 935/805 series TVs, and the Xiaomi MiBOX3 and MiBOX4.

However, there is a feature you can opt into called experimental support, and this allows you to install the app from the Play Store on an unsupported device. Keep in mind though that if your Android TV device has to get access this way, there may be bugs or glitches since this is more or less a beta version of the support.

When it comes to controllers, you can use the Stadia controller or you can use a different controller. So long as it’s supported. Controllers have to be wireless though. You should be able to use things like the NVIDIA SHIELD controller, the Xbox Wireless controller, and the DualShock 4. You may even be able to use the DualSense controller for the PS5.
