Snapdragon Wear 3100 Watches May Be Compatible With Wear OS 3.0

When Google announced Wear OS 3.0 at Google IO this year, a big question was whether or not older smartwatches, like those running on the Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip, would be compatible.

It’s still not entirely clear if any watches on those older chips will get an update. But it is a little more clear on if they could even support the software. According to a new report from XDA, Qualcomm has now confirmed that both Snapdragon Wear 3100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100 chips are capable of supporting Wear OS 3.0.

For those with a watch running on one of those older chips, this could be a potential uplifting revelation. As it would mean there’s a decent enough chance that they’ll get the updated features of the new Wear OS. Chief among them the improved battery life. But not the last of which would be the improved performance.

There’s an important detail to make note of though.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 watches may still not get the Wear OS 3.0 upgrade

There’s a big difference between saying that Wear 3100/4100 chips are capable of supporting the upgrade and that they’re actually getting the upgrade.

So however slim the chance may or may not be, there is still a chance some watches may never see the update at all. Qualcomm reportedly has not clarified any details about which watches would be updated and which wouldn’t. And that’s likely because it has no real control over that.

If the chips are compatible, then it’s still up to the manufacturers to send those updates out.

No current watches have been confirmed for the update so far

At this point in time there aren’t any confirmed devices for the software update. The only watches that are known to be getting this new software are the ones being made by Samsung and Fitbit. Neither of which are currently available as they haven’t been released yet.

When it comes to currently available devices, Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 was rumored to be getting the update at some point. It runs on the Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip. So it can support the upgrade. Mobvoi however hasn’t officially confirmed that the watch will be bumped up to the new software.

When you get right down to it, things are still very much up in the air.
