Samsung's One UI 4.0 Codename Suggests A Major Visual Upgrade

Samsung debuts major One UI versions with every newer version of the Android OS. This year, the company will introduce the Android 12-based One UI 4.0. A report earlier this week revealed that the Korean giant has already begun work on the new software for the Galaxy S21 series. Now, we have some additional information about this development. According to SamMobile, Samsung has given its Android 12 One UI 4.0 update project the codename “Palette.”

This doesn’t reveal any other specific information but the codename suggests One UI 4.0 will bring a major visual upgrade. To be fair, Samsung refreshes the user interface with every major iteration of One UI. The recent One UI 3.0 also introduced several notable changes to the UI over One UI 2.0.

However, with One UI 4.0, we might be in for a bigger visual overhaul. Google itself is heavily focusing on visual upgrades with Android 12, with changes in line with the Material You theme. Samsung might be preparing some equally big changes as well for its custom Android skin.

One UI 4.0 is still in development, might arrive in beta in October

Samsung has been impressive with its software update pace in recent years. The company has consistently put other OEMs to shame when it comes to rolling out the latest Android security patches. It has also been quicker in releasing the latest iterations of the Android OS to its devices.

However, the Korean giant, which is the world’s No. 1 smartphone vendor, doesn’t participate in Google’s beta program for the new Android versions. It conducts its own beta program, which usually comes after the latest Android version has been released in the stable channel.

So, since Android 12 is still in beta, it is going to take some time before Samsung opens its One UI 4.0 beta program. But the company’s accelerated pace with software update rollouts means it has already started work on the next big update for its smartphones and tablets.

Notably, Samsung’s work on One UI 4.0 has begun more than a month earlier than it did for One UI 3.0 last year. So judging by this and considering the company’s recent history with software updates, the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 might arrive in the beta channel for the Galaxy S21 series sometime in the early weeks of October this year, or perhaps in late September. The big update will likely release publicly in December.

Samsung is also expected to release a minor Android 11-based One UI 3.5 update before version 4.0. It should debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldables in August.
