Samsung May Switch Back To Custom CPU Cores For Its Exynos Chipsets

Samsung might be looking to design its custom CPU cores once again. The company is reportedly in talks with former CPU engineers from Apple and AMD. The talks with the former Apple engineer have reached the final stages, Korean media reports (via). The said person has “directed the development” of multiple Apple custom chipsets in the past.

It hasn’t been too long since Samsung stopped designing its custom CPU cores. Multiple reports over the past few years showed the company’s Exynos chipsets, which used custom Mongoose CPU cores, to be underperforming compared to Qualcomm’s competing solutions featuring stock ARM cores. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series processors were evidently better at thermal management, battery efficiency, and the overall performance of the processor.

As such, Samsung opted to use stock ARM cores in the Exynos 2100. This move delivered satisfactory results as well. However, just a few months on, things have seemingly changed now. Both Samsung and Qualcomm are reportedly not happy with the performance of ARM’s latest Cortex-X series cores. They want something faster and could switch back to designing custom CPU cores once again.

While developments around Qualcomm’s plans are not known, a new report coming from South Korea suggests Samsung has already made significant progress regarding this change. According to the report, the former Apple CPU designer that the Korean firm is looking to hire has demanded two things from the company.

Firstly, they want the right to form a project team for the development of a custom CPU architecture and to choose the engineers for that team on their own. Moreover, they also want complete independence to lead the developmental work.

It’s unclear when these talks took place. However, by the looks of it, Samsung seems to be committed to developing more powerful custom CPU cores this time around.

Samsung’s Exynos team has had a few rocky years recently. Consistently underperforming products forced the company to disband the team that worked on custom Mongoose CPU core designs. However, recent reports suggest it is developing a custom processor for Google. It appears Samsung is now planning to design custom CPU cores for its Exynos lineup as well.
