PHANTOM X is a premium smartphone from TECNO available starting July 1st. It is a brand new mid-range flagship from TECNO’s premium sub-brand PHANTOM.
I am definitely stoked about trying out this latest premium hardware from TECNO. So without further ado, let’s get the unboxing out of the way for a quick preview of this really polished-looking smartphone.
Unboxing the PHANTOM X
Even the box for the PHANTOM X looks ultra-premium. First off there’s a black insert, and underneath it is the phone and an extremely light and stylish phone case. And one layer beneath the phone are three small boxes that contain the 33W power brick, USB-C cable, earbuds, SIM tool, and paperwork.
As usual, there’s the 12+1 month warranty but PHANTOM also promises a bunch of new very customer-friendly options with the PHANTOM X. More details on this should be available when the phone goes on sale in various regions of the world.
Quick Overview of Specs of the PHANTOM X
The PHANTOM X features a 6.7″ AMOLED curved edge waterfall screen with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. There are two front-facing selfie cameras – 48MP main sensor and an 8MP 105° wide-angle camera. For unlocking the device there is an optical fingerprint sensor underneath the 90Hz high refresh rate display.
On the back, there’s a triple camera module. The main highlight is the 50MP main camera with a 1/1.3 inch ultra large sensor which enables some extremely clear nighttime shots via Super Night 3.0. There is also a 13MP 50mm equivalent portrait lens and an 8MP 120° wide-angle camera which doubles as an extremely capable macro shooter at close distances. But the best part is the unique textured glass back that hides fingerprints well and has built-in scratch resistance but is extremely comfortable to hold.
PHANTOM X comes in two colors as far as I know. What I have is the gorgeous Van Gogh Starry Blue and I quite like it. I believe the other color is also amazing. Last but not least, the Phantom X has HiOS 7.6 which is a custom skin on top of Android 11.
Early Impressions
PHANTOM X is a gorgeous-looking device without a doubt. Build quality is excellent with no rattles or squeaks and buttons that have a satisfying click. From a looks perspective, this is a device that can easily compete with premium hardware from Samsung or Oppo.
Ergonomics are excellent thanks to the curved screen and the curved back glass. Grip is also quite good and this is because of design as well as the texture on the back glass. PHANTOM also has done a very good job with the overall weight distribution. There is minimal to no fatigue while using this phone in one hand. Oh, and the attention to detail is also on the case which has a faux leather feel and is extremely lightweight but covers the phone adequately.
There are nice subtle touches everywhere you look. For example, the power button has a nice texture finish or a flash for the selfie cameras and a 3.5mm headphone jack in 2021! I also am a fan of the light branding on the back and even subtler branding on the camera module. In a sea of smartphones with camera modules in the top corner, I like how PHANTOM X has the cameras in the middle of the back glass. Definitely gives the device a unique look in my opinion.
Well, that’s all we have for the first look at the PHANTOM X from TECNO. Stay tuned for the full review of the PHANTOM X in the coming days.
