Google One Now Lets You Temporarily Snooze VPN With A Single Tap

Google is rolling out yet another handy feature for the VPN (virtual private network) service that the company offers with its storage subscription service Google One. You can now temporarily snooze VPN with a single tap. This feature is rolling out with version 1.101 of the Google One app.

Whenever you turn on VPN by Google One on your Android smartphone, you see a persistent “VPN is connected” notification from the app. Following the latest update, this notification now features a new “Snooze” button beside the existing “Disable VPN” button. Tapping it will pause the secure connection for five minutes.

Tapping on the “Snooze” button also brings up two new buttons – “End Snooze” and “Add 5 min”. While the former lets you resume VPN immediately, the latter will pause the secure connection for five more minutes. An alert will note the time when VPN will reconnect automatically. All of these controls are also available within the Google One app.

VPN by Google One continues to pick new features

Launched in May 2018, Google One initially arrived as a cloud storage subscription service. In October last year, the company added a VPN service to Google One 2TB plan, which costs $9.99 per month. Since then, VPN by Google One has picked up several new features.

Earlier in April, Google rolled out the ability to completely block your internet connection when VPN is disconnected. This ensured that your internet browsing is always routed through a secure, private network.

VPN by Google One then picked up the ability to let apps bypass the secure connection earlier this month. You can select apps that you don’t want to use over VPN and instead, route their traffic over your phone’s regular internet connection. Earlier, users had to completely disable VPN for that. The aforementioned persistent notification also notifies if an app is bypassing VPN, so you are always aware of it.

Now, the latest Google One update brings the ability to temporarily pause the secure connection whenever you want. This feature will come in handy in situations like, say, when you open an app that you haven’t whitelisted to bypass VPN but want to use over your phone’s regular internet connection. You can simply tap the “Snooze” button and disable VPN temporarily. The auto-reconnect feature will ensure that your VPN connection is resumed shortly.

Google One version 1.101, which brings this new feature, is now rolling out widely. If you don’t see the “Snooze” button after updating the app, you might want to manually disconnect VPN and reconnect again.
