Galaxy Watch 4 LTE, Wi-Fi Models Get FCC Certified Ahead Of Launch

Samsung‘s Galaxy Watch 4 series is expected to be unveiled in a matter of months. The devices, which will likely include two size models each of the regular Watch 4 and the Watch Active 4, have been leaked extensively over the past few months. The new watches have also recently picked up necessary certifications in some regions, hinting at an imminent launch. Now, they have received the FCC approval as well.

Both Wi-Fi (SM-R880) and LTE (SM-R885) variants of the regular 41mm Galaxy Watch 4 have received the FCC certification. As always, the listings don’t reveal any key specs of the new wearables. However, there are some useful bits of information to look at.

The Galaxy Watch 4 will support Bluetooth, NFC, dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi, GPS, and various LTE bands (LTE model only). The battery model number EB-BR880ABY, which was revealed in a 3C certification in China back in March, appears in the FCC listing as well. It is a 240 mAh battery, which should comfortably keep the watch alive for a full day, if not more. For comparison, the 41mm Galaxy Watch 3 has a 247 mAh battery. The 45mm model of the Watch 3, meanwhile, packed a 350 mAh module. Expect a similar step up on the 45mm Watch 4 as well.

The FCC documents also mention the EP-TA200 charging adapter and the EP-OR825 wireless charger for the Galaxy Watch 4. These are the accessories that Samsung bundled with its previous smartwatches. So we should get the 5W charging speed as the older Galaxy Watch models, something suggested by a 3C certification last week.

Interestingly, the recent certification in China didn’t mention a charger. This led to speculations that Samsung may not include a power brick or a charging dock in the box for the Galaxy Watch 4 series, something it did with the Galaxy S21 series earlier this year. However, that was unlikely to happen and it won’t. As expected, the company will instead bundle last year’s charging docks with the upcoming devices.

Galaxy Watch 4 series inch closer to launch

Samsung has yet to reveal when it plans to unveil the Galaxy Watch 4 series. However, multiple rumors and leaks in the past have suggested that the new devices may break cover sometime in early Q2 2021, i.e. July or August. A recent report has even claimed an August 3 launch.

The Galaxy Watch 4 is expected to be accompanied by the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable smartphones whenever Samsung announces them. Expect to hear more about these devices in the coming weeks as they inch closer to their official introduction.
