TELUS to Increase Unlock Fee by $15 on July 7

AH Telus Canada Logo 1.5 Prices are going up everywhere for wireless services in Canada, despite the government’s best efforts to increase competition. In lieu of higher monthly fees, carriers are charging extra fees on services such as unlocking your smartphone – TELUS is raising its fee to unlock your device to $50. This new fee increase of $15 will go into effect at 12:01am on July 7, 2015 and will finally match the rest of the Big Three – Rogers and Bell. TELUS confirmed in a statement to our source, “TELUS will be increasing its device unlock fee to $50 effective July 7. We apologize for the inconvenience but made the change because the cost to provide this service is higher than we originally anticipated.”

It was back in 2011 that Telus had originally started to unlock customers’ devices for $50, but then lowered the price in 2012 to be more competitive…however, as other carriers began to raise their prices, it was inevitable that TELUS raise their to meet their competitors. The latest Wireless Code of Conduct said that carriers must immediately unlock devices under two circumstances – if the customer has paid their device in-full or ninety days after the start of a two-year contract.

Carrier locks come with just about any cell phone you buy from a wireless operator and that goes even if you aren’t buying the device directly from a particular operator but are buying it from a retailer, such as Best Buy, and it’s for a specific carrier, then most likely it has a carrier lock on it. Generally, the only devices that do not have carrier locks are ones that specifically say they are “unlocked,” such as the Google Android Nexus brand or if your purchase a developer’s edition. When a cell phone is “locked,” it can only be used on the cellular carrier that sold you the phone. An unlocked cell phone can be used on any network that is compatible with the phone’s wireless technology, such as GSM and CDMA networks.

If you want to get an unlocked device on TELUS, you must act fast as July 7 will soon be upon us – a $15 savings is better than nothing and on TELUS you will have a large selection of flagship smartphones to choose from…there is bound to be one that will satisfy your needs.
