Closely following rumors, Samsung has confirmed the released of a new flagship tablet called the Galaxy Tab S2, due in stores across the globe in August 2015.
Samsung is in hot competition with others (namely Apple) when it comes to producing the thinnest, brightest, best consumer tablets. The S2 enters the game with a Super AMOLED screen with 2048×1536 pixel display. The device is 5.6mm thin and 9.7-inches high. Samsung focuses mightily on its reading abilities, with auto-adjust display features and plenty of viewing options to encourage you to treat it like a digital magazine no matter where you are. The tablet runs on Android 5.0 and sports an octa-core 1.9GHz + 1.3GHz processor with 3GB of RAM. It’s equipped with both an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front camera.
The S2 will launch with Microsoft Office Solutions, including the ability to create and edit documents and use OneDrive for two years without paying for the subscription. It also has some familiar features such as a fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication, and a quick pop-up that shows battery power, storage, and more.
More unique are the latest multitasking efforts from Samsung. The Galaxy Tab S2 comes with the ability to both run and view two apps simultaneously, or use the pop-up window to flick between multiple apps.
So how does this compare to the Apple iPad Air 2? Well, it’s close. Both tablets have about the same dimensions and processing power. The Galaxy Tab S2 does have one more GB of RAM than the Air 2. It also pitches the AMOLED display against the Retina display, both with a similar number of pixels, but the AMOLED screen sounds a bit more exciting to us.
There will be a 32 and a 64GB option for the S2 (plus MicroSD). It will also come in a slightly smaller size at 8.0-inch. There’s no info about pricing yet, but U.S. MSRP will be an important factor when pitching the S2 against other tablets.
