Marshall is a name that many of us associate with some of the best-looking, and best-sounding guitar amps and speaker systems in the world. With a rich and iconic history behind the name, it’s no wonder they’ve spent the last few years moving into other businesses. Recently, the brand has been applied to a number of high-end headphones, as well as some stunning Bluetooth speakers that marry the old school look and feel of a guitar amp with high-tech streaming and sound processing. Now, Marshall is offering a smartphone, with some of the best music chops out there, and a design that channels a long history of guitar amp design.
With the Marshall London, users will get a 4.7-inch 720p display, Android 5.0 Lollipop (which looks mostly stock to us), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, an 8-megapixel camera and a 2,500 man battery to keep things going. So far, so mediocre. Where the London sets itself apart however, is in its design, with a gold “M” button up top, a volume rocker that is more like a scroll wheel, two headphone ports and a faux-leather backing that will invoke memories of amps the world over. The Marshall London is all about the music, it features front-facing stereo speakers, two headphone ports and that “M” Button at the top of the phone gets you instant access to your music, regardless of which app you’re in.
Running the show is a Wolfson WM8281 audio chip, which is said to deliver some of the best music on the move, and the London happily supports losses FLAC files, but it doesn’t mention anything about 24-bit, sadly. There’s a global equaliser, just as there is in Sony’s smartphones and there seems like an app to handle a guitar input as well as apps to record your own music in high-quality on the move. Altogether, this seems like an excellent smartphone for those that are all about the music. It’s not got the best specs in the world, far from it, but it has a unique look and feel and it definitely has it where the music is concerned. Right now, the Marshall London is up for pre-order in Sweden for 4,995 Krona, which is around $600 or so.
