The jetpack is still largely a matter of fiction for most of us. But not to the Chinese, or at least they’re getting demonstrations. And they’re a pretty cool demonstration of jetpack technology.
Fly Away
Demonstrated by jetpack professional Nick Macomber, China’s first jetpack flight is pretty impressive. Macomber flew up ten stories, circled, and landed. Due to the enormous amount of fuel a jetpack demands, the flight was short, less than thirty seconds. On the other hand, there aren’t a lot of ways to get ten stories up quickly that are, you know, safe. Or lacking in explosives. Although I suppose jet fuel is explosive.
Macomber likens it to riding a bike; you just look at where you want to go, and you go there. Macomber also wants to fly over the Great Wall, which, you know, hard to do, but achieveable with a jetpack.
Packed Off
It’s sadly true that the jetpack is going to be a toy for the rich, for a long, long time. It burns an absolutely ridiculous amount of fuel over an equally short amount of time, it can’t go very far as a result, and therefore, it’s not exactly a viable personal transportation device.
But it’s cool. And, long term, we’re getting closer and closer to the jetpack as a viable device. Sooner or later, we’ll be in the skies.
