Google is doing their part to make the situation for licensing LTE wireless patents set on a more level playing field of fair cost terms, as Via Licensing Group is announcing today that Google is joining in with other companies who are participating in Via’s LTE patent pool. The idea, is that Via wants to make licensing LTE wireless patents fair and affordable for everyone, while making it easier to predict the costs of future holdings. To do this, they’ve started the LTE Patent Pool which is gathering together LTE wireless patents from a number of different companies, of which Google has now joined.

As one would have guessed, Google is including in its offerings to Via, the LTE standard essential patents that it gained from the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, although that is only a portion of the patents being aggregated into the pool. It is also the most significant. By aggregating all these LTE patents from multiple companies, Via is hoping to greatly lessen the risk of patent litigation when companies are needing to use LTE technology in the products that they’re developing. Google seems to be genuinely excited about the prospect of fair cost patent licensing, as they’re Deputy General Counsel for patents Allen Lo states that, “Via’s LTE Patent Pool provides a great platform for others to obtain a license to our LTE patents. We are very excited to join Via and the other licensors to help LTE technologies continue to thrive. Access to wireless technology, such as LTE, is a key component to many great products and services around the world. Via’s LTE Patent Pool helps provide a pathway towards global connectivity.”

It was widely speculated that when Google purchased Motorola so it would have ownership of its patents, that they would be using them as a protective shield from patent litigation, which participating in the LTE licensing deal with Via does in a round about way. It’ll also help to make it easier and more cost effective for other companies to use these patents for their own offerings. Google joins other companies like AT&T, NTT Docomo, SK Telekom, Clear Wireless, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile, HP, Telecom Italia, DTVG Licensing, Telefonica, ZTE Corp, and KDDI.
