At 2:01 a.m. CDT this morning, those who want to own Version 1.0 of the Apple Watch could pre-order one. I was not among them.
While I’m a fan of Apple’s hardware and watches in general – my father was an executive with Zales Jewelers and I spent many summers working in his stores, where my favorite section was the watch counter – I’m staying away for now. Apple’s initial releases in a brand-new product category tend to be close to prototypes. Look at the differences between the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G, or the original iPad and the iPad 2, and you’ll see what I mean.
In other words, I’m inclined to wait a revision or two before dropping at least $349 for a smartwatch that will likely get a big revision in a year’s time, if Apple’s pattern holds true.
If you ponied up your bucks in the wee hours today, you might get your watch around April 24 or into late May. But the current supply is pretty much depleted, and now you’ll wait literally months.
Want a space grey, aluminum model? You won’t get it until June.
Got the bank to buy a $17,000, rose-gold model with fancy band? Even you’ll have to have patience. Yours won’t arrive until July.
Apple is only selling these online for now, and the company’s retail chief admitted that supply won’t match demand for a while . May as well get your Zen on.
Did you order an Apple Watch? If so, which model? If not, do you want one? Tell us in the comments.
