NVidia Gets Into The Console Game With The Latest Shield

Up until now, NVidia has largely been a PC gaming company. They build graphics cards, and that’s what gamers know them for. But, over the last few years, with the Shield portable and tablet, they’ve been attempting to get gamers off the desk and onto the couch. And now, with the new Shield console, they’re making their most arresting bid yet.

Shields Up

Probably the most attention-getting aspect of the Shield is, well, it’s an Android console that costs $200. This, normally, is where the conversation ends. We’ve seen Android consoles before, after all, and even a $200 price point can’t normally tempt people into getting on board for Android games.

Except, of course, NVidia is making a bold bid to get around that completely. First of all, the Shield console supports its Grid game-streaming service, which allows players to hop onto a game remotely and play it off site. But more impressive is the Android games it’s lined up.

Namely, NVidia has convinced major publishers to port their biggest games to Android, likely thanks to the ridiculous firepower the Shield is packed with, a 256-core Maxwell with 3GB of RAM and a top-of-the-line Tegra. Resident Evil 5, Crysis 3 and others may be the games of yesteryear… but they’re modern enough to get some attention, and at a price point where it may be worth it to many to pick them up. Similarly, it says quite a bit that NVidia can get publishers to port these games.

The console arrives in May at $200, and yes, that includes a controller and the necessary goodies. The main question, of course, is how much publisher support it’ll see and how the various games will look on the big screen. But safe to say, one way or the other, NVidia is trying to make Android gaming happen.
