HBO has been promising a standalone subscription service for what feels like years, but it’s actually been only a few months since the company officially announced HBO Now – and then inexplicably went dark about its biggest change in a decade. Now we know why: The company has been working on an exclusive release deal with Apple.
HBO Now will come to Apple devices starting in April. According to Apple, there will be full compatibility across Apple TV and all iOS devices, which means if you own an Apple screen, you can access HBO content without a cable subscription. Previous to Now, HBO only came bundled with a cable subscription from one of the major providers.
It’s great new for cable cutters everywhere, and a big blow to cable companies, which need to hold onto premiere services like HBO to convince younger generations to keep paying for their extra channels. However, the move isn’t entirely free. HBO Now will cost $14.99 per month, roughly comparable to what many currently pay for it through a cable subscription.
As far as content goes, the new app looks a lot like the older HBO Go, offering all HBO shows and movies, plus a dedicated Apple TV channel for HBO. With the April release date, it’s no surprise that Apple and HBO are both reminding customers of all the tasty premieres coming that month, complete with a brand new Game of Thrones trailer accompanying the announcement, and prominent reminders of Silicon Valley and Veep.
It’s exciting…for Apple users. But not to worry, other denizens of the world: The exclusive Apple contract is in place for only three months. After that, HBO will no doubt be rolling out the service to other platforms so that all users can take advantage. If you want a message when HBO makes any changes, then you can sign up for more informations and any Now updates.
