Sony has promised a while back that they’ll focus on manufacturing high-end handsets and try to turn a profit that way. The company had issues turning profit in the mobile segment for a while now and it seems like they’re looking to restructure their business in order to change things up a bit. The recent report also claims that Sony intends to fire more than 1,000 people in their mobile division as part of this restructuring and cutting cost strategy, which is bad, of course. All of this doesn’t mean that Sony won’t be making low-mid range devices, however, quite on the contrary.
Do you remember Sony’s Xperia M2 handset which was announced in February last year? That was one of Sony’s mid-range offerings in 2014, and it seems like this Japan-based tech giant is getting ready to release its successor. While we wait for the Xperia Z4 to launch, what seems to be the Xperia M2’s successor popped up on GFXBench. This handset carries the E2003 / E2033 model number(s) and runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. This thing features a 4.6-inch 960 x 540 display along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. MediaTek’s MT6752 quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz is powering on this thing along with Mali-T760 GPU which is here for graphics processing. The listing also says that the device will come with 4G LTE connectivity support (Cat.4) and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. 2-megapixel snapper will be located on the front side of this device according to this listing, and Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, Wi-Fi and the usual array of sensors are also listed, of course.
There you have it folks, this definitely seems like the successor to the Xperia M2, a low-mid range offering by Sony, though I’d say this is more of a low-end than a mid-range handset. Anyhow, it is possible that Sony will showcase this thing at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona which is taking place next month, I’m only guessing at this point though, but it seems possible and probable even. This thing should be really affordable in order to sell, but Sony wasn’t really spot on with pricing in the past, so who knows.
