Do you have a Blogger blog with content some would consider sexually explicit, or shows graphic nudity? If so, its days are numbered.
In a major policy change, Google – which owns Blogger – says it will no longer allow such content on the platform’s public blogs . It can be displayed on private blogs, and any that have adult content will be made private automatically after March 23.
You have three choices before that date, according to Google:
If your blog was created before March 23, 2015, and contains content that violates our new policy, you have a few options for changing your blog before the new policy starts:
- Remove sexually explicit or graphic nude images or video from your blog
- Mark your blog as private
If you’d rather take your blog down altogether, you can export your blog as a .xml file or archive your blog’s text and images using Google Takeout.
There are some exceptions to the rule:
Note: We’ll still allow nudity if the content offers a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts.
Of course, this put Google in the uncomfortable position of deciding what’s a “substantial public benefit” and what’s merely prurient. A censor’s job is never easy.
TechCrunch tried to ask Google why this is happening, and got no clarity . However, it continues a trend, as Google quit allowing the monetization of adult content on Blogger in 2013 .
