Anytime anyone is planning a holiday, business trip or other flight bound travelling, chances are Google Search is the first place they venture. Gone are the days when you had to head down to a travel agent, pay whatever fees they said were the only ones available and at the times they suggest. Instead, simply inputting your destination plus the keyword “flights” will bring up a wealth of options for you to choose from. Not to mention, the many flight comparison sites that are now available online and offer users the chance to compare the price and time options across multiple websites and carriers. In fact, in the latter part of last year, Google even introduced a flight tracker card for Google Now which would monitor price fluctuations and variations for you. If you had searched for a flight using Search but had not booked it then Google would watch it and display the information on your Google Now, making sure you know when your flight hits the right price.
Well, there has been wide speculation for some time that Google were very much interested in launching a redesigned search function especially for flights and it seems today is the day the service has launched. Google Flights is a new flight shopping service which looks to provide users with as much information, guidance and suggestions as possible. In fact, according to the Google blog introducing the service (source link below), the idea behind Flights is to try and suggest when, where and with whom you should fly. According to Google 54% of people searching for flights using search are not even sure where they are planning to go. In short, they just know they want to getaway. With this in mind, Flights places an emphasis on being able to choose by greater regions than simply a country.
It is also worth noting that the new shopping service has some rather neat and handy tip features built-in. So when you are flying from one location to another and Google recognizes that you can save money by choosing a different airport, location or date, the search results will let you know about this option. To give you an example, when testing the service on a flight From San Diego to London (cheapest prices roughly coming in at $1300+, Google flights made it clear a saving of over $470 could be made by flying from Orange County taking the price down to just over $700. So, whether or not you are planning a getaway any time soon, you might want to take a quick look at Google Flights next time you are thinking about flights.
