Microsoft Gets Into The Smartwatch Wars With Microsoft Band

Generally, if one tech company gets into a market, the others will follow in fairly short order. If somebody’s got a smartwatch, therefore, everybody’s got to have one. And Microsoft, it appears, won’t be any exception now that the smartwatch revolution is in full swing. Brace yourself for Microsoft Band.

Getting The Band Together

Just released yesterday, the Band is actually appealing for a few reasons. The first is that it’s platform-agnostic; it can run on your iPhone, your Android, or your Windows Phone with equal alacrity and with the same data collection. So if you don’t want to use an Apple Watch, and why would you, this will be a viable option.

Another nice touch is that it’s got a ton of sensors built in, ranging from the standard like the GPS to the less obvious, like a UV sensor to tell you the overall index when you’re outside. The standalone GPS means you can go on a run, for example, without taking your phone with you.

And if you use a Windows phone, you can also use Cortana, because it’s not a smartwatch unless you talk into it like a complete dork playing at Dick Tracy. On the upside, the battery lasts for two straight days.

Honestly, though, this continues a trend of Microsoft products having some genuine thought, design, and engagement to them. Being able to wear it and use some features without having your phone with you is a welcome change of pace. And at $200, it’s no more or less ridiculous than the other wearables on the market, plus you’ll actually be able to use it. Who would have thought it’d be Microsoft that figured out a smartwatch that people might actually want to wear?
