With Android 5.0 Lollipop updates beginning to hit devices, and most of Google’s core apps already getting their updates that bring in Material Design UI’s, one more app is about to be added to that list, as Google has detailed what’s coming with the Google Search 4.0 update. Expect the Material Design UI style tweaks of course, but also new, more bold colors and a new sidebar menu and fluid animations too. One of the bigger changes as we see it is the way Google is re-designing the reminders cards. They used to show up in a stack like virtually everything else, but after the update to 4.0 reminders will each have their very own card which should make differentiating them much easier. Not that it was difficult before, but this is definitely simpler.
There is one key feature that also seems to be exclusive to a few different devices, specifically the Google Nexus 9, the Google Nexus 6, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Those three devices will soon be able to use the “OK Google” command to ask questions while the device is unplugged and the screen is asleep. The update will also bring search to third party apps, so you’ll be able to ask Google to search for something within specific apps if you need help finding something that is a little hard to locate, or if you just don’t have the time to search for it manually. If you’re the indecisive type and don’t know whether or not you should go for a dark stout or light pilsner, you might enjoy the new Flip a Coin feature of Search. You can simply say “OK Google, flip a coin” and have the app make the decision for you.
Also part of reminders now, Google periodically has the ability to remind you of certain things it might find in your Gmail about an event, they use the example of “dinner with Chris” or “drinks with Susan,” where if something like that hits your inbox there’s a chance Google can catch it and throw a card into Google Search about it if you’ve forgotten to follow up with those plans. We know it can be hard to keep up on everything sometimes that once in a while things can slip through the cracks. With the latest update to Search there is less of a chance that you’ll miss those events. The update just like every other app will be rolling out in stages, so if you don’t see it in you “my apps” list just yet, it’ll be there likely within a week as it rolls out over the coming days.
