The Chromecast has a great many uses compared to when it first launched last year, and you can now use it to stream media and music content from tons of different app sources like Pandora, HBO GO, Netflix, Hulu Plus and many more. You can also play games on it, as there are a growing number of Chromecast specific games one can try out. One of the most coveted features of the Chromecast hadn’t shown up until earlier this year though, which was the screen casting feature, allowing users to cast their Chromecast connected smartphone’s display onto the big screen.
There are still only a handful of supported devices for this particular feature at the moment, but Sony is the most recent to join the party, with a few more devices which include the Sony Xperia Z3v, the Sony Xperia Z2 and the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2. Those three devices join the Sony Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 compact which were updated with the screen cast feature support earlier this month. The list is growing for supported devices that can cast their devices displays to aTV or larger connected monitor, but there is still a long ways to go before we see this as a more open function, like when we see any Android devices running Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat and above have the ability to cast their screens. Currently the feature is in beta form, so even if your device runs that version of the OS, if it isn’t listed at Google’s support page for the functionality it wont’ be able to complete the task.
If you have never cast your screen to your Chromecast before, it’s actually a pretty cool little feature. It can come in pretty handy if you want to watch locally stored videos on your phone’s memory, or if you want to play a game on the big screen that has gamepad support. There can be a tiny bit of lag though between what’s happening on the phone and the response time seen on the big screen. Nonetheless the feature is here for a handful of different Sony devices now, and we’re sure to only see this list keep growing.
