I have many fond memories of Restoran Seng Lee on Jalan Batai from my internship days. Having only a minimal pay each month, me and my internship peers often flocked to Restoran Seng Lee to fill our tummies with cheap hawker fare like char kway teow, pork noodles, wantan noodles, and curry laksa.

However, due to redevelopment plans, Restaurant Seng Lee and a few other premises have had to relocate. One of the new tenants that we spotted along Jalan Batai is Sitka, an intimate, 40-seater neighbourhood café/eatery.

We were told that its simple two-page menu was inspired by the food scenes of Copenhagen, Barcelona, and London. The menu is constantly evolving, depending on the availability of ingredients and the chef’s new ideas.

I liked how Sitka sources and uses local produce wherever possible.

We were there on a Sunday morning, and there were only four items available from the breakfast menu (9.00am – 11.00am). Fortunately, Sitka offers plenty of choices when it comes to cakes and pastries. Our order of mushroom quiche (RM 11) was so delicious, where the homemade all-butter pie crust was filled with a generous amount of umami goodness.

The combination of braised brisket and sweet potato hash was so wholesome and comforting, especially when they served it together with a 63 degree egg. The brisket was so tender that it fell apart when we carved it. Poke the runny egg yolk, give everything a good stir and voila! The perfect breakfast dish on a Sunday morning.

So simple, so good – we gave the breakfast taco two thumbs up when we tried it. The texture was half-crunchy, half-squishy combo due to the scrambled egg and various chopped vegetables in it. The melting oozing cheese was holding everything together and the delicious salsa sauce just jazzed up the flavours.

Sitka is not your ordinary café; the food here is lip-smackingly good. The price is a bit on the high side but you get what you pay for.

Every Thursday to Saturday evening, Sitka’s Test Kitchen offers diners a chance to sample a tasting menu with friends and the occasional cocktail. Look forward to casual dining in an environment without the fuss of tablecloths and conventional fine dining rules.
