Nokia to come back to phone market? Nokia Z? Z launcher, HERE for Android? Jolla Sailfish?

NOKIA LOGO

There’s reports that Nokia might be coming back to the phone market. It’s only suggestive and something folks had speculated since the Nokia Microsoft deal indicated Nokia could not make smartphones of their own until 2016.

During a conference call, Nokia admitted that the NOKIA name is a very important asset to own. Hence perhaps why they were not willing to let go of it to Microsoft and thus we have Microsoft Lumia?

And finally on brand, we have not really spoken about anything else that we have looked at different business models, what other people have been using on brand and we will of course carefully assess what would be the best way for us to maximize the value of the Nokia brand, also taking into account that we’re in the lock-up period still in the Microsoft transaction regarding our possibility to use the brand and we have recognized that Nokia brand is the most valuable from recognition perspective in the area of mobile phones and mobile devices. And there we cannot go yet at the moment.

The diehard Nokia fan inside obviously wants to see them come back but would it be a smart move? Nokia’s D&S is over at Microsoft – though there were a lot laid off by MS who could eventually return (not that they’d just stand around and wait for Nokia). Patents wise, MS is only licensing them. They’re still Nokia’s to use, though the trademarks like PureView, ClearBlack are owned by MS and future developments are for MS.

It seems obvious that should they come back, they’ll do it on Android. But it’s not completely out of the question that they might try and solidify the Finnish front and try Sailfish on Jolla which can also still use Android apps and hopefully by then will sort out its quirks and be regular consumer ready.
