The Nexus 6 has been shown to the world with a November release, so it’s time to start making decisions. The most obvious competitor is definitely the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, with similar size and specs. Which one is better?
there are multiple factors to consider here. These are both high-end smartphones, and now that the Nexus 6 is priced at $649 we can see a much more fair battle in the horizon. Let’s look at their specs and then jump into other factors you may want to keep in mind.

Design and build quality
This is one area where it’s pretty easy to beat Samsung. Almost any other major manufacturer can make a better-built device compared to Sammy’s. The Note 4 looks good, but it won’t feel as premium as the NExus 6, which is based off the amazingly-built Moto X.
Of course, ultimately this is a matter of preference. Some of you may prefer the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which does have an aluminum frame this time around. It does manage to look and feel a bit better than the Samsung Galaxy S5, by the way. But ultimately, we will have to give the upper hand to Motorola’s build quality.
Display
In terms of displays, it will mostly be a matter of size preference. The Nexus 6 has a slightly larger display at 5.96 inches (compared to 5.7 inches), but otherwise they are pretty much identical.
Both have an AMOLED QHD (2560x1440p) screen. This does mean the smaller Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (never thought I would call a Note a “smaller” device) has a higher pixel density. Pixels on the Note 4 will be a bit more compressed, making the image a bit more clear. The difference is quite unnoticeable, though.
Performance and software
Both devices feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805, unless you have a version with an Exynos Octa processor, which is in the same reigns as Qualcomm’s alternative. Pair these processors with 3 GB of RAM and you will find that these devices are both super fast and powerful.
The main differences will be in software. For starters, the Nexus 6 will come with a pure Android experience. This is usually preferred by users, as the UI is much simpler and cleaner. On the other hand, Samsung’s UI tends to offer a plethora of cool features. Even though some of us consider them gimmicks.
In addition, these devices will be separated by their Android versions. Of course, the Nexus 6 will come with Android 5.0 Lollipop, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will launch with Android 4.4.4. We are sure Samsung will update the OS at some point, but it may be a while before they do.
Camera
We need to test these cameras before passing judgement, but Motorola is not as known for its great images. Samsung makes pretty decent camera phones, even if they aren’t exactly the best.
Battery life
In terms of battery, we can assume both devices will be pretty on par. They sport very similar displays and processors, as well as nearly-identical batteries. We may see slightly better battery performance in the Nexus 6, though, as the UI is not as heavy and resource-hungry.
One thing, though. If you want a removable battery, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is one of the very few devices in the market that still has that. That may be a huge factor in your equation.
Which one will you get?
As mentioned before, the fact that both of these are priced so closely makes this a much harder decision. Previous Nexus devices have been amazingly affordable, making Google’s phone an obvious choice.
This time around we are really looking at a battle of preferences. Both are amazing, but you will have to take into account what you want in your next phone. Do you want a pure Google experience and timely updates, or the many fun features Samsung offers?
Don’t forget Samsung is also readying accessories, wearables and IoT devices that usually work best (if not exclusively) with Samsung smartphones. If you are interested in a Samsung Gear VR or something of the like, you may want to stick with Samsung.
As for me – I can’t help but point out the many benefits owning a Nexus device still offers. A pure Android experience is something really hard to let go of. Not to mention being on the forefront of Android’s updates and Google’s new features.
