Microsoft Garage launches new apps for Android

Microsoft Garage is a place where Microsoft allows their employees to work on any project that they desire, whether that project has something to do with Microsoft products or not. The official Microsoft page for Garage states that it’s a place for employees to work on anything they want, which is why today, a whole bunch of new Android apps have been released.

One of these apps is called Next Lock Screen and, as the name so covertly suggests, it’s an app that takes over your phone’s lock screen with its own version. The lock screen allows users to see their emails, text messages, and more on their devices without having to unlock the device. These include being able to look at your calendar (a quick glance, as well as being able to scroll through upcoming meetings), quick app launch (the app shows your most used apps for quick access), and make it yours (which allows you to make your lock screen background dynamic throughout the day by having it change based on your location).

Another app is called Journal & Notes, which is a social based app made for travellers. The app essentially works by letting you see people that have travelled the same path as you and connecting with them through the app. The app can be used for train and bus journeys, and works to allow you to not only connect with other travellers, but also see their tips and stories for the route you’re travelling on, which might come in handy for when you want to know what hotel to stay at.

CityZen allows you to send information to your local government to help fix problems that plague your community, though it only works in India right now.

And, finally, Bing Torque works with your Android Wear device so that you don’t have to search with Google. Instead, once the app is installed, you can twist your wrist to start searching with Bing without saying a word. Though, I guess you’ll have to speak the question out loud anyway. It’s like having Microsoft’s version of Google Now, named Cortana, on your wrist.
