Key.Me Stores Your House Keys On Your iPhone

At some point in our lives, we will be locked out of the house. It’s just a fact of life. Fortunately, though, it doesn’t have to be one we deal with for long. Thanks to a new app, Key.Me, we can keep our house keys on us at all times… and have a spare made whenever we need it.

The Key To Unlocking

It’s actually a fairly simple idea once you get a look at the app. You take a photo of both sides of the key on a white background, done so you can clearly see the ridges and valleys that make up the key. Then, it’s stored on your digital keychain within the app for when you need it. And if, for some reason, you didn’t back up your keys, somebody with that key can send it to you and you can add it to your keychain. Basically, you’re storing the information you need, instead of the key itself.

So, when you need a key, you’ve got multiple options. One is to simply go to a locksmith, give them your phone, and have them grind you a new key; the app offers step by step instructions on key grinding. If you don’t have a locksmith you like, you can go to a kiosk provided by the company. And if you just want some spares and don’t feel like running an errand to get them, you can have them sent to you by mail order.

As for security, Key.Me claims that its procedures for scanning keys are enough to prevent what they euphemistically call “flybys,” but with that in mind, you might want to consider keeping your keys on you at all times. You’ll also get contacted when a key is made, so at least there’s that.
