One of the more fascinating trends in the last few years is the rise of total, 360-degree video. Instead of being without any sort of option for moving the camera, now it’s actually easy; just swipe in a stream and you’ll go in that direction. Now it’s a question of higher resolution cameras and seamless video, and Joey appears to have nailed both.
A Fuller View
Joey comes from Kogeto, who you might remember were behind the popular 360-degree streaming tool Dot for iPhone. The Dot was enormously popular, as it essentially made video conferencing shockingly easy and seamless on the go. The Joey is essentially an expansion of the concept; it uses the same idea, but scales it up, including the resolution.
Look All Around You
The effect is nothing short of stunning. The Joey turns out high-resolution 360 degree video with an enormous amount of range. As the video is streaming to you, all you need to do is pick a direction and flick, and you’ll seamlessly go in that direction. The single-camera nature means that everything is perfect. It’s true that it’s not perfect; due to the way the Joey is designed, you’re not going to be looking very far up. But consider, for a minute, that you’re getting 4K, 360-degree video streamed to your phone from this device. Really, looking up is overrated. It’ll be retailing for $1300, but it’s just $850 from the Kickstarter.
