Gionee is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer which you’ve probably heard of at this point. Gionee is not that well-known out of Asia, but you’ve probably heard of that company because they’ve been all over the news at certain point due to their extremely thin smartphones. The handset we’ll talk about today has a completely different main characteristic though, battery. The device I’m talking about is Gionee V188S which visited TENAA (China’s equivalent of the FCC) at the beginning of this month. This device is now available for purchase from retailers in China, Tmall being one of them (source link below).
Gionee V188S features a 5-inch 720p LCD display along with 1GB of RAM for your multitasking needs and 8GB of internal storage (expandable via MicroSD card up to 128GB). The device is powered by MediaTek’s MT6582 quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz and it comes with a beastly 5200mAh battery on the inside, which is this device’s main selling point. On the back of the device, you can find an 8-megapixel CMOS camera while there’s a 2-megapixel shooter located on the front of it. This is a 4G LTE device and it of course comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the usual array of sensors. V188S ships with Android 4.4 out of the box and it measures 144.5 x 71.45 x 10.4mm while it weighs 182.5 grams. This device will cost you 1499 Yuan ($245) if you decide to buy it from Tmall, I believe other retailers are offering a similar price in China. The device is unfortunately available only in China at the moment, so if you want to get it internationally, you can’t, at least not yet. It is available in white only at the moment.
As you can tell from the specifications, this is a mid-range offering by Gionee. It is quite obvious that the battery is this device’s main selling point, it makes it a bit thicker and heavier than it would be with a smaller battery on the inside, but I bet many consumers are willing to put up with the added thickness and weight (which are not all that significant) in order to get great battery life out of this thing.
